For those sick with Creative. It's about 2/3 down the Today Only section.

Asus Xonar D2X is the world's first PCI-E interface high end audio card featuring SNR up to 118dB. Xonar D2 provides intuitive DS3D GX to solve Vista gaming audio issues, and Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) for best voice communication quality, the Xonar D2X will undoubtedly provide the best gaming experience ever.

ASUS Xonar D2X -Solution to Windows Vista Gaming Audio Problems
With the introduction of Windows Vista, the whole audio architecture landscaped has been changed. This has resulted in teething problems for gamers - with the possibility of losing all surround sound or hardware accelerated Direct3D and EAX while gaming in the Windows Vista environment. To circumvent this problem, the ASUS Xonar family of audio cards utilizes an ASUS exclusive technology - the new DS3D GX extension in the Xonar D2X driver; to provide full support for surround sound and hardware accelerated features by translating DirectX to the DS3D GX. While other solutions like OpenAL requires special installation and game support, DS3D GX doesn't. Gamers can enjoy DirectX gaming with hardware enhanced surround sound and EAX effects automatically and immediately after installation.

Cleanest Voice in Online or LAN Game Chatting
The Xonar D2X also includes the innovative "Acoustics Echo Cancellation" (AEC) technology to facilitate the best online voice communication quality. AEC can eliminate up-to-40dB speaker echo return and suppress noises that would otherwise enter the users microphone making the Xonar D2X the best audio card choice for online chatting in VOIP applications (Skype, MSN, Google, QQ, etc.) or online gaming.

Unparalleled Sound Clarity
The ASUS Xonar D2X also features a signal- to-noise ratio (SNR) of 118 dB for both audio in and out - reaching the maximum limit of audio quality on most PC platforms. Unlike generic audio cards in the market that provide the highest SNR to only the front stereo outputs, the Xonar D2X is able to deliver 118 dB quality audio for all 7.1 channels.

Dolby and DTS for Complete Digital Home Experience
Besides delivering impressive audio quality, the Xonar D2X is also packed with multiple sound technologies from Dolby and DTS to deliver outstanding entertainment experiences.

Hard decision in which sound card to go for though?

Does the Digital Coax on this have any advantage over my optical toslink from my motherboard?

it has dolby digital live / dts connect. so you can get 5.1 over coax for games.

if you only use your curren coax for films, then there is no difference. it's only worth buying a posh soundcard for analog outputs, or if you need dolby digital live / dts connect.

Thanks for that explanation, yeah I don't need it, £70 saved

my calculator can do that

sorry , I mean my iphone

I like the speaker on top of the card.

Does it mean I don't need to buy extra speakers?

Yes, I have this sound card and the analogue out sound so much better than the digital.

Quite a lot actually.

If you do decide to get the soundcard at least when you upgrade your speakers you will feel the benefit more.

That depends on the DACs in the soundcard vs the DACS in the your amp / active speakers. My current soundcard sounds better than my Denon amp via analogue....

The only bad thing I can say about it is the devs are taking their time to bring out a properly working Windows 7 driver (right now you need to install a patch for it to work properly). But other than that it's great, and I always jump at an oppurtunity to stop supporting that joke of a company we call Creative!Currently have it hooked upto my surround sound via digital out and it feeds DTS/Dolby II signals through to it perfectly. It also has a DS3D GX mode which emulates EAX. Something Creative stopped bothering coding for when it came to their older cards (Audigy 2, etc).

I'm using Win7 and I'm looking at getting this card. Any issues with using this card + win7 + that patch?

Just go for a cheap sound card which can output over s/pdif. Most built in ones can. Then decode the signal using an external audio or A/V receiver. Most of the expensive sound cards are expensive because of better quality DACs so if you get that out of the equation, you don't need to spend so much.

hahah....

Yeah I'd vouch for this card because of the good reviews....Beats the overpriced X-Fi series anyday. Creative are terrible when it comes to listening to what their customers want and have given my nothing but trouble with my Audigy card in Vista.

surely ur better off going for an hdmi lossless compatible gfx card if u have a serious setup this doesn't do PCM 7.1 or DTSMA!?

For Dolby HD/DTS Master you'd need a HDMI Audio Capable AV Reciever Amplifier (this does not include the £150 Sony amp with HDMI), which start at £230+.

I consider toslink optical from my i7 Desktop and SkyHD to be lossless, if not quite at the above high end standards.

Not sure why anyone would want to spend this amount on a sound card...

If you've connected it via a digital out to an external amp then the soundcard isn't processing the signal so there's no benefit over onboard sound chips [assuming they have a digital out!]. Creative had an edge with hardware accelerated EAX but Microsoft filed that idea under the 'upgrades aren't always beneficial' heading.

Creative did release the 'Alchemy' driver for EAX under Vista [for free in the end] which means you can continue to experience what you had come to expect [under XP]. In my experience ASUS support isn't much better than Creative's so who knows what lifetime [both] these 'bridge drivers' will have.

link doesnt work

EDIT: oh wait it does, its just wayyyy down the page

What Denon do you have?

I have a 1908 and with digital, base is really lacking compared to analogues from this card. And thats with cheapo 5m jack to twin rca cables too.

This was all i could find scan.co.uk/Pro…%29

I wonder if some analogue stuff has "enhancers" to sound which distort what original sound, but do make it sound better bass wise versus digital output where no such enhancing distortion takes place until it hits a digital amp/dac etc...

But a digital amps DAC will win hands down to a cheapo small DAC on most soundcards and playback devices analogue outputs (plenty of moaning from audiophiles with iPods wanting digital output)

The burr brown dacs in this 70 quid sound card are better than in my 300 quid amp.

Although you would still expect the electrical noise from the computer and the dedicated processing power of the amp to play a part in making the amp sound better, but it just doesn't (to my ears).

absolutely superb card.. had one when they came out and happily paid double this price.

Even if uber sound isnt your thing.. this card is very bling bling

Just got mine delivered and It needs a Floppy power cable that isnt available on my motherboard so now looking for a HDD to floppy power convertor !
ironically there is about 10 cables in the box but they dont supply this essential cable

Got one with mine as well. didnt need to use it though, cause my corsair had one
