I absolutely love what Asus have done with this. I saw Linus take a look at the pro model and it really caught my attention. This isn't the Pro mode,l but either way it's a good set of specs.

Now... the price has been down at £1199 before, but it has since gone up to £1299. If you add it to your basket on Currys Pc World eBay, the 5% automatically comes off, bringing it down to £1,234.05

I have tried the other codes, with hope that we'd at least get another 5% discount thrown in annnnnd there was no such luck on that front.

One thing this doesn't have is an Ethernet port, so if that's a no go for you, you'll need a USB adapter for it. Not an expensive fix, but worth noting

If only they added 51p to the price.
Seems a decent price so long as the 3 year warranty is with Asus directly. I bought the £1200 amazon deal and then got the warranty later for £70 from Asus so overall more expensive than this deal.

I've replaced the LCD on this laptop because my cats jumped on it within two weeks of ownership, it was a fairly easy process apart from a bit of double sided rubbery tape to hold the panel in. Replacement panels are £40 but you can get fancier models with higher brightness for £80. I'm mentioning this because the design of the laptop has hot air blowing onto the LCD panel near the bottom where the backlight power circuit is so there's a good chance it will fail in future and need replacing but that shouldn't scare you off. The touchscreen models have a glass layer replacing the plastic bezel around the LCD so it could potentially be retrofitted to a non-touch model, if anyone can find teardowns of the touch model's screen I'd appreciate it.

I tried doing a fresh Windows installation and immediately regretted it as a stock installation doesn't include drivers for the touchpad for instance. Hook up to the Internet (WiFi card not supported so tether to a phone over USB) and windows update will sort most hardware out for you. You will need to install most of the Asus bloatware to regain brightness controls over the lower panel. Windows and Linux think it's an external monitor without brightness controls by default.

Linux, I tried Ubuntu 19.10 and WiFi didn't work out of the box so I switched to Manjaro which works well so long as you select non-free drivers for the gpus. If I didn't do that I had awful flickering on monitors. Apart from having to tie the touchscreen and pen input to the lower monitor on boot it just works. Battery life is pretty good under Linux too which is a surprise but I do have the mx250 turned off.

Main pain points with the hardware are still exactly what I expected. The keyboard is good but not that comfortable to use because it's quite high up off the desk (get a wrist rest). It uses a barrel jack for charging so I've ordered a USB PD trigger to barrel jack adapter off ebay (4.5x3mm). The USB C port is data only, no charging, no thunderbolt and no video out so I'm looking for a good deal on a dell D6100 or similar to act as a docking station.

How useful is the second screen? Extremely. I've got one external monitor too and still find myself using the built in second screen for things like slack during a video call or for writing notes with the pen.

Think you've got to look at the target audience abit.

Alot will really like the dual-screen form factor but also its major selling points are actually the large battery, the smooth performance and thermals, the good quality panels and the capable speakers.

Sure the ergonomics aren't perfect but alot of the Asus range is going that way by the looks.

I think it's a better option over a macbook air or other laptops that are good for productivity but have usp or show off factor etc.

Another good deal mate

The mx 250 is fine for what this is for.

You can get away with some light creative work as well with this because of the cpu.

I like the concept, but there is supposed to be a major difference in quality between the two screens. Also I cant get over the use of DDR3, although I notice you mention DDR4 in the specs. Might want to double check that.

Good price though.

Bit pricey for this spec
I might be mistaken but john lewis are doing better specs for 1299 16gb instead of 8gb. £70 difference might be worth looking at too?
If only they added 51p to the price.
Just realised its currys explains everything
Really disapoointed with the quality of my Asus zenbook UX533FD, it feels sluggish and quite cheap compared to my old XPS 15. Key feedback is poor and the case is showing signs of ware, but hardly traveled as I have a work laptop.

I wouldn't recommend that myself i agree but alot of what asus make is decent with some blips.

Kind of missing the point about what this laptop is for. Personally wouldn't consider an mx250 laptop with not many features & a generic build for over 600 a good deal

Apples. Oranges. Different needs.
Omg thingy.
Ordered one, let's see. I'm a big screen real estate lover, but accept the keyboard etc may be a compromise.

I also note that whilst it's an i7, it is the low power version and comes out in benchmarks around a ryzen 5. Dunno... either way given it a punt as, in theory I dont need that much power (that said it's a chunk of cash).

I would avoid pcword ebay at the moment. They are not responding to any product or late delivery issues. 4k Samsung monitor not working and they have an automated response to say call the know how team. The Knowhow team tells me it's ebays problem not theirs dispite me stating ebay is a platform and pcworld curry's sold me the monitor then they hung up on me.

Check their feedback and twitter feeds.

Yes I am angry as I am out of pocket by £200 as I needed to get a monitor to work from home otherwise company will class it as unpaid leave.

however the laptop looks great 😁
Considering cpu is low power model I guess gpu is also low power too? Quite annoying as some manufacturers do not state what type of hardware fitted.
That amount feels very generic. It is like someone in the finance office said, "how much should we put this laptop up for sale?" then someone said "just 12345 it"

GPU is standard MX250. CPU isn't a "low power model", U series are what most laptops use.

H Series processors have four to six cores, instead of the two or four you find on most other Intel CPUs. Thanks to hyper-threading, the Core i7 units can actually have 12 concurrent threads. ... Because they generate more heat than U series chips, you won't find H CPUs in super-light or thin laptops.

U ultra low power, most laptops use it as its cheaper and requires less power 15watt. MX250 was released in two versions too similar like intel CPU's one 10watt and one 25watt. Intel at least marks them with U, where Nvidia did not bother with that too much giving benefit to manufacturers make more profit. Desktop GPU's fitted to laptops marked as max-q as also are less powerful to accommodate thermal capabilities
Deal is great, but ASUS should be more clear with specs so future owners don't have disappointment. Razer as example lists specs in detail with no hidden surprises

To be honest in newest ultra slim laptops everything is soldered ram, cpu, storage. Main argument is that making product lightweight and even more slimmer. Obviously extended warranty is a must on such devices as otherwise repair cost is horrendous And as you say up-gradability is non existent on such devices

Not disagreeing, but will clarify. You're right on the Nvidia MX chips, don't know which is featured here - buyer will need to check a review. Tbh, whichever it is, it's still "light gaming" class.

"Desktop GPUs" don't get fitted to laptops, full stop. GPUs in laptops are mobile specific parts. (Before someone points out a laptop with a desktop CPU and/or GPU, I don't doubt they might exist but it's very, very rare. They're "Luggables")

H series CPUs are for gaming and mobile workstations. Not standard laptops. Think thick form factors because of the cooling required. Tbh, performance isn't a world away. U series chips can have hyper-threading too!
(laptop design, thermals and cooling can have far more of an impact than the exact CPU used. Most laptops throttle). There's lots of cases of "worse CPUs" out-performing "better ones" due to poor design.

This is definitely not the norm, it's disingenuous to even mention IMO (for what little it's worth ).

This deal is for an "ultrabook" with a second screen. The price is competitive. Why people insist on comparing it to completely different things mystifies me
