Looks like a great machine for a good price.
The only negative about it is the keyboard isn't backlit. A relatively minor issue.

I think I'll pick one up in the next few days. Let me know what you think or if there's any better alternatives.

Update: Looks like there's been a price drop overnight! Now down from £584.96 to £539.95!

Not to put a downer on this deal but there has been cheaper prices than this. I purchased this laptop in july from amazon for arround £550. laptop is perfect for non-graphic intensive/ processor tasks. Would be perfect for a family member or a standard student.

Are you sure it was this one?
There's quite a few similar machines. One has a FHD screen, another has 4GB ram or a standard i3 cpu.

that does look like a lovely little machine. PCIe SSD as well, dayaam.

Yeah its the 8gb, passive cooling m processor, its a really decent machine and the build quality is perfect. Just dont go expecting it to do any majorly intensive tasks but other than that it still packs a punch. It is super thin and super light. For any average user it is perfect. Video rendering and photoshop can take a toll, but other than that its a cracking machine. My only gripe would be there's no backlighting on the keyboard.

so since checking amazon I realised how much of a good deal I had this summer. The laptop has gone up to £634 on amazon where I paid 550, given this deal some heat.

Yeah the lack of keyboard backlit is my only issue with it too.
I've got an X99 6 core desktop that will handle any heavy workloads so this should compliment it well.

JL have dropped the price on the machine overnight by £45 so I've just placed my order. Way too tempting to pass up.

after checking the price on amazon this deal is a steal mate and pretty much like me then budd as far as desktop is concerned. I would recommend this to you lad in that case!

The i3 zenbook is £499 in several places, CPUBoss doesn't really make clear why this processor would be better? I see it has more RAM but that's an easy upgrade later on if you think you need it.

The differences between them are:

M3-6Y30 vs i3 6100u
5w CPU vs 15w CPU
The i3 is around 25% faster but does use more wattage.
The M3-6Y30 is passively cooled so no fan meaning absolutely silent operation.
4GB RAM vs 8GB RAM on this one.
The UX310 has a USB Type C port.
The UX305 has a QHD+ 3200x1800 screen resolution whereas the UX310 has a FHD/1920x1080.

Probably means the battery life benefits of the M CPU are outweighed by the drain of the screen. OK if you must have super res or like to have the specs for specs' sake, but I'd think for most people, given this is isn't a gaming machine, they're not really going to see the benefits of the extra pixels. I'd probably go for the 310 personally even at the same price.

You are very right. The power savings provided by the cpu are drained by the super high res screen.
If you are using it out and about/on battery regularly for long periods (>6hrs) then I certainly agree with your choice. FHD is ample for productivity.

I'll be using mine as a complementary device to go along with my high performance desktop and will rarely be away from an outlet so having a 2.8x increase in pixel count is an easy trade off for me.

Wouldn't you rather have the extra CPU grunt?

Also worth mentioning if you are part of any gift card discount scheme, you can reduce the 310 at Currys - I can get 6.5% discount on Currys cards through my work's childcare scheme (plus whatever TCB are offering on Currys), or the 310 at John Lewis has a 2yr warranty.

EDIT: duh forgot this one was at JL too!

Nope. Especially when I won't be making use of it anyway.
I've got an overclocked i7 5820k @ 4.3GHz in my desktop. If I need to do anything cpu intensive it will be done on there.

Just seen Currys have 10% cashback on Quidco - if I was in the market, that would definitely tip it for the 310 - the extra resolution is really unlikely to be worth it unless you stream 4k, and why would you do that on a 13.3 inch screen?

I'm very wary of Currys cashback deals. Twice now I've gone for Currys deals through TCB - the first was rejected and I had to file a claim which eventually got me what I was owed but only after months of waiting. The second one was supposed to be 5% cashback and instead I received 1% cashback - I filed a claim for the remaining amount which was rejected after 4 or 5 months...

I've generally found tcb good at sorting claims myself, think only once have I not got it.

Any chance this will run Fifa/Pro evo?

I've found the same with every company except Currys - TCB have been next to useless dealing with my claims with Currys and all I seem to get are generic copy and paste responses to my communications...

Almost certainly not - the Core m3-6y30 has Intel's integrated HD 515 graphics which is nowhere near the minimum requirements of a GTX 650 for Fifa 16 (http//gp…73)

A real shame it does not have a backlit keyboard

Excellent deal indeed, but for me the dealbreaker is the lack of Ethernet port.

It comes with a USB ethernet adaptor if that helps.

I paid £535 for this from Amazon in the summer. It's a great laptop.

Weird spec. QHD+ on a 13" is just unnecessary. Also drains the battery faster. They should have ditched that panel and put the money towards a better CPU.

I suppose it depends on your requirements. The CPU isn't a powerhouse but it is super low wattage and is passively cooled so is fanless. Truly silent operation with zero moving parts.

The resolution is overkill but if you're ok with trading some battery life for much higher ppi then enjoy the crispness

I brought this from John Lewis in March fir 599. amazing machine I love it

There's more to it than that, it's not just total power consumption that the Core-M benefits from its lower TDP means it runs much cooler allowing it to run with passive cooling. The ULV range may have a little more grunt but they're still weedy processors for anything that needs a decent amount of CPU horsepower, I prefer the Core-M processors for thin and light machines since they can run silently and cool whereas the ULV processors aren't much faster in reality and run noisy and hot in thin machines. I leave the 'grunt' to my hex core overclocked i7 in my desktop which is significantly faster than any mobile processor.

That said I don't like higher than 1080p screens on Windows, a 3200x1800 screen on 13.3in needs a lot of scaling and Windows is very inconsistent in how it handles scaling, some stuff looks great, some looks terrible and others just look downright strange. At least with a 1080p screen you can easily use it without scaling or just a small amount.

Give them a call, your local store may have stock. Worth a look.

Picked mine up today, just switched it on and there's a dead pixel in the middle of the screen It's going straight back.

Update: Exchanged it instore. Replacement seems to be fine so far touch wood.
