Community Updates
Currently 40%-70% off at all Maplin stores increasing each week, administrators will start closing down Maplin shops from next week with the remaining shops closing 1 month from now I can confirm all maplin shops will be closing none of them will survive, for the last of the best products they sale at Maplin it's best to buy now as a lot of the good stuff is still currently available. only a few more delivery's will be made to shops staying open the longest and that's it when it's gone it's gone.

Why a shame. They were over priced.
Very little left online now.
The place is full of overpriced rubbish cold from me that's why they ended up like this

Some things yes, although most of the comparison is with online. They provided a local service and the ability to get stuff immediately. I bought quite a few things from them over the years.
Already posted 3 days ago and very cold.

You're right, and I already knew that. This was kind of a protest post as people are STILL posting individual items. I'm getting bored of seeing them now.

EVERYONE knows Maplin are closing, so the individual deals shouldn't be allowed on here.
That’s what happens when the venture capitalist vultures take over a business and saddle it with debt with massive interest payments.

Everything I post goes into moderation and even if it's remotely like another post ( especially if it's another mods post) it gets kicked into touch. I've even seen them update their original post to add my info.
add the 40% you save back onto their prices and its easy to see why they are closing.

Agree, so I don't understand how any of these 'deals' get any heat. Puzzled

Shops still have loads in. Most stuff they still have needs at least 80% discount to be anywhere near realistic.
True, but like bq, Halford and waitrose the extra your paying is often for the high Street convenience, also they pay their tax AFAIK, they employ a broad range of ages and dont pay their staff a pittance- relatively speaking.
Compared with the amazon method of cheep and efficient + tax dodging they're doomed.
However the ethical side of amazon leaves a lot to be desired and how that pans out with a decimated retail sector is still to be revealed.

Oh also 40% off the hue bulbs, so 4 e14 for about £80 (Rotherham branch)
Maplin were good for buying odd little things, like capacitors etc when you needed to repair something straightaway. I can use 'RS components' now I suppose.
Was in the Swindon store the other day. Still loads of stock.
The stuff they had @ "30% off" you can still get cheaper elsewhere!

Crying shame as they do stock a lot of niche products but unsustainable to run so many high street stores.
The world is changing.

RIP Maplin.
I've been in the one at st Paul's in London the last few days. And the stock levels have hardly dropped. There is nothing worth the marked up "discounted" prices.
been in 3 or 4 times now, they dont seem to have anything prices go up and then back to the same price! Rubbish
almost everything was way overpriced despite %30-%40 off most of the items are still overpriced...

Maplin is £150 Million in Dept.
Maplin is currently owned by Rutland Partners who bought Maplin for £84 Million in 2014.
Maplin is in Dept to Rutland Partners (Maplins Owners) over £100 Million, £30 Million to Google, £10 Million to Wells Fargo, the rest to others.

Basically Rutland Partners bought Maplin in 2014 and placed the full amount as dept plus interest on Maplin and that's the main reason Maplin is going out of bussiness. Maplin was dept free in 2012.

So you are correct.

Thanks for the news that they are closing all stores, really didn't know that. *faceplam*
In a way it is a shame they are closing because they offered something different in the high street, but their pricing meant it became a place only for the desperate or the unknowing shopper. Everyone else went and shopped way cheaper elsewhere.

I still miss the old Tandy stores.…...
I do feel these Venture Capitalists should be made to pay any debt their subsidiaries have as too many of these failures leave other companies fighting for survival and the VCs walking away usually in profit. The administrators should just have a mega fire sale and stop trying to squeeze a few extra quid out by keeping staff on and prices high. Might as well cut their losses now. Unlikely anyone is going to buy any stores or rescue the business. Perhaps someone like RS could buy the brand but maybe not. Guess it also means the administrator will get paid more the money get they draw it out. The ones who really suffer by this mismanagement is the staff and suppliers.
I could be wrong but i bet the owners have actually donewell out of owning maplin even if they eventually crumbled under the debt that seems to appear when owned in this kind of structure. Bit like monarch airlines and numerous other brands that get bought by venture capitalists.
It sounds to me that the debt was levied on Maplin. Therefore the owners don't have any debt at all.
So when Maplin dies the debt dies with it

Clever way of writing of debt. But a crappy way of doing it
its 40% minimum but some in my store like the conessions are only 20-30% of the RRP as thats a different part of it as if it states RRP then they dont have to reduce it to the minimum discount but then you can get up to 80% off as all the big wheels of cables in mine are 80% off & lots of bargains to grab

I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did.
Maplin has 6 holding companies above it, it never stood a chance. The same thing happened to Man United, the idea is you buy the Company with its own money and saddle it with debt. As long as the Company can pay the interest and cover the money taken out, it is OK!

Anyone interest in Maplin a good link:
