I'm also a newcomer when it comes to the atelier series and i asked the same question. I ended up picking up the latest atelier ryza... Its pretty damn good!

I have never played any of them but from my understanding Ryza is more like a traditional RPG than any other before it. If Ryza is how they are going to do them going forwards, then I would just start with that one and if ore the rest. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I really appreciate the more direct experience.of Ryza, after playing this I just can't go back to more traditional Ateliers now

The games are not really story-heavy enough to matter that much, but Ryza is the first game in a new series, while Lulua is the 4th game of the Arland series and has lots of references to the previous three.
