On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her older sister Cecilia (Kiera Knightley) strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching Cecilia is their housekeeper's son Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), a childhood friend who, along with Briony's sister, has recently graduated from Cambridge.

By the end of that day the lives of all three will have been changed forever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had never before dared to approach and will have become victims of the younger girl's scheming imagination, and Briony will have committed a dreadful crime, the guilt for which will colour her entire life.

Sounds like a faithful adaptation of the novel at least.

Amazing film.

Very mixed opinions, I usually dont like "love story" films as my mrs calls them but I thought this was very well done, well acted etc... just a very depressing story, I felt rather miserable at the end!

Lovely film 'til the end when I just felt depressed and rather cheated.

They filmed some of the marsh scenes with James McAvoy not far from my house. Rented the DVD when it came out only to find it was not in the main movie but in the deleted scenes section instead! Endured the film all the way through but would definately not buy it, also the swear words used by one of the child actors was a bit offensive and I thought it wasn't called for. Seemed a lot of hype to promote the film, but it was very dissapointing to watch in the end.

Although, I must say the fountain scene with Keira Knightley was a treat to watch over and over again.

You can recreate the scene at home for yourself if you have one of those lifesize plastic skeletons.

Very slow to develop the story - almost gave up as nothing of any note happened for quite a while. Also, story is very convoluted and not easy to follow - too much innuendo. Finally, very depressing ending.

Because of all the hype, one of the worst films I've seen.

The C word was uncalled for in the film, it just made it tacky

thought it was a fantastic film, not happy , but fantastic all the same. great price!
