Is the antibacterial treatment worth the extra £5?

My Peugeot is 55 months old, Air con is still ok and not needed recharging.
The antibacterial treatment is not needed unles when turned on it smells bad.
The best fix is to replace the pollen filter every year. I used a can to treat my old vectra.
I took out the pollen filter and set off the can while leaving the sir con on recycle setting.
Ten mins later it was done.
I then put a new activated charcoal pollen filter in.
    Never smelled again.
So a regular change of filter did the trick

Could be at that price. I bought an aerosol can from euro car parts and did myself, think it was around £7.

Not bothered regassing as I’ve heard countless stories of older cars being regassed and the cold AC diminishing within a matter of weeks - would assume all those cars were “tested” prior to regas.

They legally have to vacuum test the system prior to gassing. If it has a leak they are not allowed to gas the system and can be severely fined for doing so as per f gas legislation.

Not robust at all because if they find a leak they can't proceed and have to give you your money back, so even if they find a leak they will re-charge your system anyway just so they get paid. A few weeks later your AC stops working so you go back and they will be very apologetic and re-charge it again for free but also point out you have a leak and the same will happen again unless you get it sorted "so would you like us to fix it Sir?" If you say yes then win-win for them, they get more of your money, if not then they know you're unlikely to return a third time or complain, you'll just give up, so they still win.

Otherwise they’ll dry out and let the gas escape. Also after about 5 years, the air con gas starts turning corrosive. So you should change at least every 4 to 5 years even if the system still works fine to prevent it eating the seals from the inside...

I think Honest John says keep your aircon on 12 months a year to keep the system healthy - this doesn't mean keeping your air cold 12 months a year, just keep the aircon on and adjust temperature with the other controls
  7. gardner1's avatar
Why do people only turn it on in warm weather......its air con just keep it set at a comfortable level all year round on lowest setting
  8. alfiejts's avatar
The equipment clears out the old refrigerant and then takes a minute or so to pressure test the system.
So it you’ve a cracked pipe, it will know instantly that it can’t hold a vacuum and will stop the refill process.
But it’s never going to spot a very slow leak that seeps pas the seals in a couple of months, because the pressure change in the few minutes it’s doing it’s test will be so close to zero that it’s unmeasurable.
It’s not the company ripping you off, it’s just that you’ve got such a slow leak that the machine can’t detect it.

I had the same issue using exactly the same ATS/Groupon voucher last year. From what I've been advised, you should periodically use your A/C otherwise the seals (?) form leaks. Obviously, you don't want to use it all the time unnecessarily as it will reduce your mileage when there is absolutely no need... HTH

the machine is set up to test for leaks before it can refill the system

basically: 1 - empty system, 2 - test for leaks, 3 re-fill system plus add the nice smelling stuff/ lubricants

you can't just let the old gases escape, they have to be contained & disposed of safely

Of course it wastes fuel, doesn't matter if it's only a small amount, you're still burning fuel for no benefit. It's true not using the aircon for months will ruin the seals but that doesn't mean you have to leave it switched on permanently, 5 minutes a week will do the job.

Total rubbish. Its robust enough to find a reasonable leak (maybe not one that would take months to drop) If they find a leak they absolutely will not recharge it a) their system wont allow it and b) they would find themselves in legal bother for knowingly allowing the gas to leak out in to the atmosphere.

"so would you like us to fix it Sir?" - more rubbish, they don't repair A/C systems.....

I had mine done yesterday and it failed (as expected) no charge, no issue, no attempts to get any more money.

I have a 2010 Prius and faced the same problem. In the end I managed to find a local place that specialised in car aircon (and they train engineers to do it too). I had a sneaking doubt these were the guys that garages call in to do it using one of their mobile vans. Paid £60 last year.
