Audio Technica AT-LP2X - turntable with adjustment and upgrade potential £169 Currys eBay

Posted 29th Jan 2022

This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:

An entry level turntable from a reputable brand which has enough adjustment options to allow the stylus and cartridge to be upgraded for improved sound in future. At current prices, upgrading works out less expensive (around £200) than buying a turntable with the same higher quality stylus fitted from the factory (around £289). Also, you might be happy with the original cartridge fitted to this and never need to upgrade

Upgrading is one of the most cost effective ways of improving the sound quality from a turntable and is often impossible on entry level turntables.

On this model the tracking force, antiskating force and position of the cartridge in the headshell can all be adjusted. This opens up a wide range of upgrade possibilities, for example:

- A generic elliptical stylus for the cartridge this turntable comes with: £33
- A genuine Audio Technica elliptical cartridge, the AT-VM95E, which comes fitted to much more expensive turntables: £44

The main reason to upgrade is to get more accurate playback of the record - reproduction of high frequencies in the treble which a conical stylus won't pick up and better tracking of the groove so less distortion of the sound, especially during louder passages near the centre of the record.

Some people are bothered by this, others aren't, so an entirely personal choice. It's also potentially more of an issue with some music genres than others - I have encountered distortion most often on classical albums which have loud endings on the grooves very near the centre of the record.

Edited to clarify the benefits of having the option to upgrade.
