On the lookout to replace my current price as the cost of maintaining it is escalating and came across this.

Wouldn't normally bother with anything from a supermarket, but the specs and Avenir(Raleigh) have me intrigued as it looks to be a pretty reasonable road bike for the money.

Cheapest price elsewhere is 326.98 @ bikes2udirect, roughly 400+ elsewhere and 500 at Tesco (excluding discount codes).

No reviews, but tempted as it seems a bit of a steal.

Looks alright. Go for it.

14kg is huge for a bike liks this!!!

I saw the weight as well, but realistically, its still lighter than most bikes this price(road or hybrid), my current bike weights 16-17kg I think

bargain. heat added.

Who cares if it's 14kg? Half the time you hear that as a criticism, it's from some Sunday cyclist, or comfortably middle class dude with more money than sense.

You're not winning or losing any races over a kilo or two. You're not racing. Become a stronger cyclist if weight scares you.

That being said, Raleigh make cheap ****. I've not heard much about Claris but at least it doesn't look like it was hammered into shape from **** (a rude word meaning stony waste metal), like Tourney or other low end, unnameable groupsets.

With the STI shifters it's really not bad for the price.

Just bit the bullet and put in an order for one, so once it's arrived I'll post up a review/impressions/photos of it.
I agree Raleigh do make some cheap ****, but so do most bike companies in this price range (generic or well known) - at the end of the day, what matters is the quality of the components used and how well the user keeps it maintained.

Look at it like this, at 14kg it will go down the hill bloody quick!

True. Wouldn't be surprised if you could split the components on this bike and make a bit of money on it.

Modern bikes have drive train components made of cheese. The thing about whacking 11 gears on a cassette is that you're making the materials thinner and thinner until they're barely fit for purpose. Then again, consumer level groupsets are probably estimating usage of about 2 hours a week of light cycling, 7 months a year.

I wonder how the Tektro's will handle it.

what about sizing??? does anyone know what would be the best size for someone who normally uses a 56-58cm race bike????

18" or the 20"

look at the product code for sizing 18" is rac47 so is 47cm in standard road bike size

the 21" is rac55, so a 55cm bike

Looks like decent spec for the money.....good find...heat added

Links to the 20in (~51cm) :Here

And the 22in (~56cm): Here

Both are £240 and £2.95 delivery

Do a quick search using Google, and you'll find this going for a lot more elsewhere, seems to be a good deal at the original price, let alone the discounted price.

I'd be interested to see if the weight really is 14kg, since the frame is aluminium + carbon forks, it would take some going to manufacturer a race bike that heavy.

Not often you get such a good spec. at this low price, certainly likely to be better than anything at Halfords for similar money.

mike

Not a bad bike, for the price... Shimano Claris is a recent (and decent) addition to Shimano's group-set system.

Let us know how it is. It seems like they aren't selling it anymore.

14kg might be 4/5 kg heavier than a high spec racing bike, it's true. But I'd suggest that unless the rider is an athlete, they probably have many more kilogrammes of fat on their bodies!

Cycle components are actually improving in quality with every generation. I have bikes fitted with components ranging from SRAM Red to Shimano Sora and they have all proven to be reliable and good quality. The nearly base model Sora's have been used for thousands of miles per year, in all weathers and have not been found wanting. Comparing these to the components on my 'racing bikes' back in the 70s, they are hugely better, more reliable and hard wearing. With every generation with more gears, the materials have to be improved in order to hold the quality. Claris may be second from bottom in Shimano's range, but they are still very good quality and will perform on a budget bike much better than the parts found on supermarket BSOs!

Since a few of you sound like you know what your on about....

I'm getting a bike from work (cycle to work scheme) and have around £350-400 to spend...at Halfords ONLY.

Been looking at the Carrera Vulcan Mountain Carrera Vulcan Mountain and also the Carrera Crossfire 3 Hybrid.

Anyone have any opinions on these?

The Vulcan has longer travel suspension, hydraulic brakes, standard mountain bike wheel size.
The Crossfire has shorter travel but with lockout, road bike sized wheels (700c) and shows to be a little lighter.

Your choice is rather limited at Halfords for that sort of money. I'd get the Vulcan personally.

Has anyone had a update about orders??? I got a reply about placing an order but nothing else since.
Also I'm sure I read some where items are normally dispatched within 3-5 days.

I think mine arrived Wed/Thurs last week by city link(said by Wed 28th). Definitely a decent bike for the money, pity they have stopped selling it, would explain the price.

Have not heard anything since ordering about 8:20 on the 20th, so maybe they have no more stock and that's why it was pulled. Might call them did out what's going on.

Gutted if it does not come as I've already bought some accessories.

I have one of these the bottom bracket creaks and the wheels are badly made which causes inner tube to explode (holes on the valve side) and rideing does not inspire confidence
