Avocados - 7 in a pack (ripen at home) £1.50 @ Asda

Found 28th May 2015
Found these today in my local Asda and had to look twice at the price as usually a lot more expensive than this. You get 7 in the pack for £1.50. The only downside is you have to ripen them at home - takes 5-8 days, but think still a bargain at this price?
Haven't had the chance to check whether available online yet.
Just taken out of the plastic bag they came in to put in a brown paper one and noticed they are called 'Baby Hass' variety - net weight each 123g - 137g. Don't have my avocado measurer with me, but I know I've paid at least a quid in the past for just 2 this size - but, just updating info as didn't want to be accused of misleading anyone...

out & about, but should have mentioned - sorry, it's Walsall.

I recall seeing a tree with loads of Avacados
on it in Malaysia. The locals did not like them
so they were left to rot. Why do avacados
cost as much as they do normally? Anyway,
I ramble on. This is a good deal so welcome
to HUKD and thanks for the post.

You're welcome, summer - I love them too.

Hot hot hot!! Annoyingly, just back from Asda, but I'll def call in soon to try and nab some of these! I usually buy the ripen at home 4 for 99p at Morrisons. Tbh, they take AGES to ripen, at least a week, despite.. Putting them in brown paper bag, in the fruit bowl with apples, etc etc. cheapest avocados ever!

I love an avocado and this is a great price Tawny.

Heat added.

I just picked these up in Southampton town store. Great price

Thanks OP, +heat

Avocado ripens best when placed in a bag of rice. Don't ask me why but that's an age-old trick.

Thanks for the tip X)

avocados in South America are seen as fruits, not as a salad ingredient like here.

I love avocado smoothies. just blend one with milk (whole, for a better taste) and sugar. yummy.

Scorchio. Addicted to avocados. The cheapest i've seen them is £1.50 for four in Morrisons.

Heat added!

like it! Don't think I'll have any 'too late' ones in this bag, babyxxx - more like the 'too early' variety. X)

Unbelievable price. It's more than this for 4 at Tesco. I find leaving them on a windowsill in full sun makes them ripen quicker than the brown bag with other fruit method. The other problem with the latter is it causes your bananas to over ripen really quickly!

Great price tawny. Pity not online as I don't have an Asda here. Place next to a banana (touching) and will ripen soon. Love then for guacamole. Had a tree full of them in Zambia

Fruits produce Ethylene gas which ripens the fruit, the rice helps to contain this gas and therefore ripens the fruit quicker. Ethylene is used in commercial ripeners to ripen fruit. Avocado is a fruit. I used to work in a food production factory 15 years ago and used to manually de-stone the Avocado put them in bins full of lemon juice and then dice them using an Urschel machine.

You can read more about ripening in this interesting wiki >

A variation of this is where the last Avocado says bad instead of too late.

Don't you always have to ripen them at home? Unless you pay double for something that is "already edible".

Thanks fishmaster- very interesting info.
Says to keep in the fridge on the packaging, but think will try your rice method - they'll just keep tempting me everytime I open the fridge otherwise.

See your point, kebabtheif, but it's not always stated on the packaging - as was the case with these.

Great deal, thanks..If you put these under a bucket sprinkled with soot they ripen overnight.

It's a great deal twitwoo.

I always find the avocado thing a bit of a con. You can buy it but can't eat it yet. Or you can pay a lot more for something edible. In this case, it is advertised as such. It wasn't a dig at your deal but directed at the sale of avocados in general. i.e. if you're gonna buy some, plan ahead.

This is a great deal and I will try to get some.

It must be avocado season, they were 19p each in my local greengrocers last weekend.

Thanks, kebabthief - no offence taken from your first comment, at all - just totally empathise with. The only time I've been able to buy and eat on the same day is when I've bought them in the reduced section. (_;)

Place in a plastic bag, with a banana or tomatoes, close the bag to keep the ethylen generated by the banana or tomatoes within the bag, the avocado will ripen faster.

cheers twoo,that is cheap
