Guardian columnist Dr Ben Goldacre takes us on a hilarious, invigorating and informative journey through the bad science we're fed by the worst of the hacks and the quacks! When Dr Ben Goldacre saw someone on daytime TV dipping her feet in an 'Aqua Detox' footbath, releasing her toxins into the water and turning it brown, he thought he'd try the same at home. 'Like some kind of Johnny Ball cum Witchfinder General', using his girlfriend's Barbie doll, he gently passed an electrical current through the warm salt water. It turned brown. In his words: 'before my very eyes, the world's first Detox Barbie was sat, with her feet in a pool of brown sludge, purged of a weekend's immorality.' Dr Ben Goldacre is the author of the 'Bad Science' column in the Guardian and his book is about all the 'bad science' we are constantly bombarded with in the media and in advertising. At a time when science is used to prove everything and nothing, everyone has their own 'bad science' moments -- from the useless pie-chart on the back of cereal packets to the use of the word 'visibly' in cosmetics ads. This book will help people to quantify their instincts -- that a lot of the so-called 'science' which appears in the media and in advertising is just wrong or misleading. Satirical and amusing -- and unafraid to expose the ridiculous -- it provides the reader with the facts they need to differentiate the good from the bad. Full of spleen, this is a hilarious, invigorating and informative journey through the world of 'bad science'.

I started dipping into this yesterday. His chapter attacking Gillian McKeith is quite amazing - I just thought she is a little weird, he seems to regard her as evil personified.

Fantastic book - blows apart all the pseudo-scientific crap that assails us nowadays - digital lemonade, quantum toothpaste (alright I made those up but then I'm not flogging anything am I?) and as for homeopathy .... don't get me started

I posted this 3 months ago, admittedly for a penny more

Great book, and a good deal.

looks a good "onthebog" book to read . ..thankyou I was tiring of my current selection.

it comes up as £7.12 for me.

Looks good. Heat and ordered!

I ordered from Amazon instead, £3.57

Would make a good present.

A lot of these "alternative" views are a bit like a cross between religions and pyramid selling schemes, i.e. beliefs founded more on conviction rather than evidence and heavily marketed by vested interests.

Are you sure you didn't add 2 to your basket? ^__^

P.S. This is an AMAZING book.

Finished it on the train this morning and loved it! Essential read.

Great book! £3.57 at Amazon if someone's got an account there already.

Great book - well written, witty, entertaining and educational. Don't forget to look at the authors website....

Ordered - Thank you

This book should be required reading in all schools. Don't be put off by the light tone of some parts, the facts he discusses (not opinions, guesses or made up stuff like Gillian Mckeith's body of work) are sometimes shocking.

Watched him on Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People over Xmas on BBC4 excellent stuff, you can buy last years DVD with him on from gofasterstripe.com

Seems I am on my own then in not enjoying this book. It just read to me like a couple of hundred pages of rant, there wasn't really anything new it.

This is a fantastic book, great price. HOT
