Barclaycard retentions for "loyal customers", £50 credit when you call to close account

I have a Barclaycard which I haven't used for some time since the cashback rate dropped on the VISA card.

I rang them to cancel and was offered £20 to keep it open, I refused and after taking my details to close the account the advisor then increased the incentive to £30. I said I'd keep it open for £50 and he checked with a supervisor and got it done.

Not sure if it will apply to everyone, he was emphasising that I am a loyal customer, with them for over ten years etc.

Good luck!

I don't know what the switch process is but I wonder if you could do it after you've used the £50 credit?

Bro bro, bro.
They wouldn't let me cancel because I still owe them 10k
Just tried it. Barclaycard informed me I've been a loyal customer for 29 years.... Didn't offer me anything except the benefits of a Barclaycard.. Ha ha!!
Guess what? went ahead for cancellation, they put me hold for some reason may be talking within their department and came back and said very nicely "we are happy to cancel your card" and you will get confirmation letter in 3-5 working days. Enjoy your day.
However not voted either way as it might be useful to someone. Anyway thanks OP.

I've done this twice in the past, got £30 each Time then finally cancelled as the app was buggy as hell
How frequently do you think you can 'repeat' on this offer - 12 months is definitely possible - do you think 6 months would be too cheeky? Also what are the best 'reasons' currently? I did reduced cashback twice but might need a different reason next time as that is a while ago now.

Interesting thesis. I would love to see your research papers. Please point me in their direction.
Barclaycard are no good to me 'cause they refuse to issue non-contactless cards. Either Nationwide or Capital do plain cards. My reason for not using contactless cards is that my details got stolen from my card. I got a refund but wont take the risk in future.

Is that ok?
They don't offer everyone the £30 or £50, I spent over £2,000 every year on my Barclaycard for 20+ years (apart from the past two years where I've been using a M&S Card instead) and I've always paid my statement off fully every month without fail, Just phoned up to cancel and I was asked the reason I wanted to leave the 'Barclaycard Family' after 22 years, so I told him that other cards offered better loyalty points etc, and he closed the account all within 3 minutes!

I was just about to post about this! I have just got my second £20 credit from them after asking to close my account, balance has been at zero for about 4 months, got the first £20 in December and another £20 today!
