Found 22nd Apr 2009
Went in Sainsburys after work to check out their half-price deals but also came across this gem - Baron De Belmotte French Red at only £1.99 for a 1.5L bottle.

This works out a quid a normal bottle!!! Also I grabbed a box of 6 to get the usual discount.

My weekends are sorted (for a bit anyway).

I'm a Red Wine drinker YamYam. what's this like?

Despite the temptation, I won't be cracking open one of these bad boys 'til the weekend.

The label reads (if that's anything to go by) "this Southern French red wine is made from a blend of traditional, local grape varieties such as Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. It is soft and fruity with lots of blackcurrant fruit and a hint of spice".

So to be honest it's probably very light but it is 11.5% and should be good for a Sunday night tipple.

I like red wine with my dinner occasionly so will check it out in the morning and grab a couple. If true a great deal. Heat added anyway

Hope you find some but it's not like you'll miss them if they're there!:-D

Seriously though, they were on the bottom shelf (probably for H&S reasons).

Hot.... but people on here make me laugh with their comments. It's a wine for £1.99 for a litre and a half and you're concerned what it will taste like!!!!!!!!!! Just splash out with the £2 and live dangerously

Can't go wrong, even for getting a little merry before going out to the pub is worth the £2 punt. Although asking what it tastes like seems a fair comment, it's just socialising on a website forum isn't it?

If your palate really is too refined for this I'm sure it would be fine for Sangria! I agree with Tonygee, no harm in asking ... someone might have tried it before.

Brilliant price for a bottle of wine, just a pity its a shocker!! Good for the chips not for much else!

hmmm - theres no such thing as a free lunch ......why is this so cheap, someone quick taste it and tell us if its a bargain

Disagree... we're talking 2 quid , not £20. When you think of the VAT, transport, bottling etc etc you cant expect anything more than a just about drinkable wine

is this what goes on your chips, also known as vinegar.
some cheap reds are just like that.

Strength anyone?

Also does it taste like Shato Rpiss?

HOT - although probably steaming too.

Voted Hot

No matter how naff it is, at this price you just neck it before heading to the local 80's revival nightclub for Abba and munters:-D

Your missing the point, IF there was no comments or queries regarding the product in question wether 1p or £10,000 then HUKD would not be as popular as it is. It's what this site is all about. It's pretty much the reason their are threads in the first place.

Probably tastes a little iffy but you never know, no harm in asking!

Could always cook with it if you can`t drink it!

I appreciate where you're coming from, but come on man... the bottle is £2 for 1.5 litres. You can spend £2 on a Sunday newspaper but you dont stand at the newsagent and read it all before you buy it

Okay mate, I give up. I would save £2 on the paper, read it on-line and buy the wine. Pretty thrifty heh:p

don't you? nah. only joking. but isn't the point of drinking, to, i don't know, maybe enjoy it? Otherwise might you be just as weel drinking antifreeze?

i do drink anti-freeze actually. and when i do, i dont ask for peoples advice on how it tastes before i buy it.

Getting a little merry?...... call me a lightweight, but this would have me on the floor before going to the pub.

This is a bargain - its way cheaper than anti-freeze.. probably tastes better too. HEAT.

I bought six bottles when I saw it and got an extra 5% off:)

I've opened it and its actually very nice.

I'm far from capable of writing a review but it did surprise me. I have had worse wine costing £7-9 a bottle.

A simple way to desribe it is a watered down Australian Shiraz.

I'm no fan of french wines and I think pound for pound in comparison to a a Chilean/Australian or South African they lack any real flavour when the wine style is full & fruity. This just tastes like a £5 bottle of french wine (0.75cl bottle not 1.5:-D)

way to go henry123! someone talking sense because you actually had the courage to buy a bottle and taste it.

Farts and isopropyl give way to blackberries and chocolate–sounds scary, but decanting is your friend.

Nice bottle of Sarsons :-D

Most Moldovan wines I have tasted were really good - although it seems there is some bar on them being imported to the EU.

Probably the ethylene glycol content.

Nice bottle of Sarsons :-D

I think the vinegar from pickled onions, capers, and olives tastes brilliant.

I normally drink what is left in the jar before they go to the recyclers.

Yowser !

I have also had a sandwich that I have loaded with the aforementioned pickles - just so I could finish the jar off.

Which according to the only review online it is.

Mind you, whatever you do, don't buy the Sainsbury's Baron de Belmotte … Mind you, whatever you do, don't buy the Sainsbury's Baron de Belmotte (Syrah) 2006. Made from a blend of traditional grapes, supposed to be superb value at £5 a litre, which it is - for bloody vinegar!

Look!

That is no way to talk about vinegar!?!?!?

Hi

The two people who have managed to buy this can you please state your local store?

I just called sainsburys customer care line to check stock in my local (uxbridge) and they have said according to their system no stock anywhere and looks like they were just clearing this range and is end of line that's why that price.

Thanks

Alright Bargain04

I had my 6 from Telford and had it straight off the cage that they use to get the booze on the shelves. So obviously they had the bottles in only recently.

They probably are clearence as there was no mark-down just a plain white shelf label stating £1.99, the name, 1.5L, etc.

None in my local Sainsbury's. I'm off shopping today for other items and their is a big sainsbury's there so will try again. Anyway got 6x De Cecco(500g) spagetti half price for 74p so a worthwhile venture.

Good in bolognese, just add 1/2 a bottle of it in the pan when you put the minced meat in.

Isn't there a new law about a minimum cost per unit of alcohol?

Local Store: Worcester (Blackpole)

I got 3 bottles from my local sainsburys, doesn't taste as bad as you would think for the price. Just using mine to make sangria tho!

got another 6 bottles today, plenty of stock at coventry sainsburys
