Funny to realise how one's attitude to risk changes with time:

I bought a broadly similar item about 15 years ago, I'd planted a eucalyptus tree in the wrong place and it had grown far too big.

Being a sensible chap I decided not to cut it at the base - that was asking for trouble, so I put up a three section ladder and with minimal PPE or electrical safety, started lopping off quite substantial chunks of wood, dodging them as they fell into my (and next door's) garden - it was Saturday evening and I'd had a can or two of beer and I was feeling brave. Oh how we lauhged.

More by luck than intention, nothing bad happened, and I as satisfied in a "job well done"

I went to use the same saw a few months back, on firm ground and only cutting about 1.6m up, realised how slack the chain had become (my bad, not enough chain oil) and came out in a cold sweat thinking that in spite of my adjusting it, the chain might jump the guide and take my head off.

We don't let kids ride mopeds without doing a CBT- why on earth do we let people buy these without even the most basic training?

I mean - all joking aside, apart from losing the occasional limb and bleeding out - what's the worst which could happen?

(note to self, next time I get the saw out, make sure the queue at the local A&E is less than five hours!)

Not voted either way - for all I know all purchasers may be trained and experienced chainsaw users with full body armour and head guards.

    Stay safe, people

When you've got a chainsaw, everything looks like a log.

    Weeding? Chainsaw.
    Lawn Edging? Chainsaw.
    Leaf blowing? Chainsaw.
    Filling bird feeder? Chainsaw.
Zombie Apocalypse? Axe. Don't want to get Zombie guts on my chainsaw.

When i was in my early teens i used to cut logs with a monster of a petrol driven chainsaw, now in my 50’s I look at an electric hedge trimmer with trepidation. (edited)

I love my power tools, and have a fairly large range, saws included, but these things scare the bejeezers out of me. It's the thought of that literally fraction of a second where you suddenly lose a limb, because the chain snaps or something, and there is nothing you can do about it, so I just stay the hell away from these things.

Very wise comment. I bought my chainsaw on a deal a few years ago then used it with just basic ppe. At the time, buying full PPE felt like I wasn't getting the benefit of the deal of the chainsaw so I went for just basic limited coverage. One day I was up a tree and the chain came off but luckily got stuck in the thick branch I was cutting... it could of turned out much worse. Lesson learnt - if you're going to get a great deal on a chainsaw or a like don't skip investing on full coverage quality PPE to keep you safe. It only takes one bad event. Stay safe guys.

Great deal, I've ordered one! I have an electric Bosch chainsaw which has been great, though the chain tensioning bit is now very difficult to adjust; I was going to go for one of the more expensive self sharpening models; but for the price of this one and the occasional use it has it was too good a deal to miss!
  36. jr007's avatar
I keep thinking of the serial killer who I hired a chainsaw from… he was jailed and died in prison but had a tool hire shop. My Dad would ask me to return the chainsaw after we trimmed a tree down.

I know I shouldn’t but the idea of switching this on at 3am in the bedroom whilst wearing a hockey mask and shining a torch under my chin whilst this wife is asleep…. Really appeals!!! I suspect however, she won’t see the funny side until a few days later

    Yep lol.

Got a range of size of chainsaws for logging.
Used the big one to cut a tree down

Came to use the little one, over confidence u could call it trimming and bang kick back straight down side of hand.

Don’t throw the chain package away, photograph the numbers on it, the chain stretches very quickly so you will need to replace it when it gets to it’s maximum length, from eBay.
