Please note this is advance notice of the release of this BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for iOS and Android users. Only 2 more days to go

Here's some info to wet your appetites ...

"Those eagerly awaiting the release of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for iOS and Android have just a few more days to wait.

BlackBerry on Wednesday announced that its so-called "mobile social network," previously only available for BlackBerry smartphones, will begin rolling out for Android and iPhone users around the world on Sept. 21. Once it launches, BBM will be available as a free download on Google Play and via the App Store.

"With more than a billion Android, iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones in the market, and no dominant mobile messaging platform, this is absolutely the right time to bring BBM to Android and iPhone customers," Andrew Bocking, executive vice president for BBM at BlackBerry, said in a statement.

The app will let users chat with friends on Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry. Users will be able to see that their message has been delivered, and also see when their friend is responding to a message. In addition, users will be able to share files, voice notes, and schedules right though the app. There's also support for up to 30-person group chats and a feature known as broadcast message for blasting all your BBM contacts at once.

Each BBM user is given a unique PIN, so they don't have to give out their phone number or email address to new contacts. The app also lets users post personal messages, a profile photo, and status updates

In addition, BlackBerry is also planning to add video and voice- calling features for Android and iPhone in future versions.

The app will be available for Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean on Sept. 21 and iPhones running iOS 6 and iOS 7 on Sept. 22. In addition to finding it in the App Store and Google Play, users will be able to download BBM by visiting BBM.com from their smartphone browser."

SMS/MMS,
Whatsapp,
iMessage,
Skype,
GoogleTalk,
FBmessenger,
Viber,
Kik...

I might have considered starting using BBM.

Oh and its 2013. BBM is dead.

Well do look in adding that to your list when all your friends and family get it due to the hype it'll get.

BBM may be dead but I ensure you not for long, pretty sure they'll be add-on features that'll attract users quite easily. I Can see them coming back.

Cool

A Blackberry fanboy lol?!

You are the last of your kind. They should prob map your genome or something...

it doesn't offer me anything that Google hangout doesn't, and that supports video too...

Unfortunately a lot people avoid Google hangouts like my friends. They however are all familiar with BBM and it will be very easy to connect with them once again. BBM is going to destroy Whatsapp once it is out. I recently moved over to android from BlackBerry and I have seen that people only buy BB for bbm. Now that USP will come to other platforms for FREE!!! People are going to switch over and Whatsapp may fade away. Lets see what happens.

Last ditch attempt to try to resurrect it. Initially keeping it for BlackBerry phone s so it was exclusive, then giving it away when it became less of a selling point. Will be downloading it but has to offer something new to get people to change their ways.

what happened...did the CIA budget get approved for this as well?

Hot.

happy with googles hangout

BBM, now there was a band....

Wonder if I can use my old BB pin

BBC I will download but only for the one or two friends I have who use it. I currently have a BB work phone which had been nothing but trouble. anyone who buys a BB today is mad when Android and ios phones offer so much more.

LMAO, you accuse someone of being a fanboi! yet by your own admission have almost every app that a 12 year old kid has, you should try interacting with real people and look up now and again from your pseudo life and I'm sure he'd rather be the last of his kind than so diluted in the digital soup that you've become insignificant.

Oh dear, the history of BBM has nothing to do with being exclusive, it was launched for a specific purpose and was adopted by the masses because it worked, and what's wrong with giving it away and moving with the times...err nothing....and what do all the other apps offer that is new....err nothing....it's an App to message people, just like all the others, it doesn't need to offer anything new, it does what it does and people will use it.

But . . . But . . . He said it is 'better than whatsapp'! I'm so confused now.

The problem is, how is a free app going to help save BlackBerry from the fiery pits of financial oblivion that they are heading for? Do they think people will buy their phones cos of the app? No, they won't, otherwise they'd have already bought them.

I'm sure like most people, I'd have paid a whatsapp style fee for this service on android/ios . . . . about 5 years ago. Now, not so much.

BB missed the boat with this. Should have made this available years ago. The vast majority of people I know who use BBM (and there really aren't many any longer who haven't already moved to something else, at least as a complementary service) are late twenties to mid thirties incredibly fast texting women. I really have no need for this. Still, it's nice for those who do, albeit very late to the party.

Having the use of, 'or facility’ or something does not mean one has to use or has had to of used such thing in the past.

Who rattled your cage anyway? Sad troll like creature.

Actually, I think you'll find it does... I don't doubt many people will get this, but there is no logical reason why it would become more popular than Whatsapp etc. This is far too little, far too late.

Why exactly would I want to use BBM when I already use Whatsapp, Facebook or SMS to reach anyone I'd want to contact?

I'm also curious why you're so upset just because someone said some disparaging remarks about a smartphone app? Diluted in the digital soup!? If I didn't think you were being serious then that would be hilarious!

Only issue i can see is if/when BBM will be chargeable like WhatsApp. I currently use WhatsApp and find it to be a brilliant app. BUT as soon as they brought in yearly charges I've moved onto other messenging systems. I do feel there could be a steep decline of WhatsApp users, but for how long can BBM be free? The company is in dire straits, just let 40% of their workforce go, so how can they afford to offer it for free? Unless after a limited period they start charging for the privilege?

NO i'm not a Blackberry fanboy, never will be! Don't like their products, prefer Apple devices on the whole & some Android phones.

callum9999 - there are other apps out there that do things similar to WhatsApp none so-far i feel are as good or as widely used. With BBM moving into the arena I do feel WhatsApp will lose some of its user base. Why pay 69p annually when you can get BBM for free? But for how long though?

Banned

^^^ As with many things Whatsapp will remain popular because of the ties to the service that people have. Much like facebook - many would move on if their friends, acquaintances and family would also. Messaging apps don't hold anywhere near as many ties though, but I wouldn't expect a huge seismic shift away from Whatsapp now their user-base is so large. And it's 69p...

If RIM had decided to do this years ago, they might have had a say in the current market. As they didn't they've been left on the scrapheap and are no longer the popular phone they once were. Most people these days are using smartphones, which (as someone pointed out earlier) allow you to install apps like Viber, Skype, WhatsApp and Kik for example. They didn't get their fingers out, and people have moved on. Even their newest device is now a smartphone (lacking the tactile keypad) to get back into the market.

I've voted hot, because it is - but RIM should have done this a long long time ago. I can see some users opting for this, but it won't be the next big thing I can asure you.

Slightly off-topic, but the new Samsung Note III which is due out in the next couple of weeks is also missing the Corning Gorilla Glass which is a huge mistake. They've packed it full of high tech hardware, running on Jelly Bean, yet have ommitted one of the biggest pro's about these devices. So, be warned if you were interested in this device - it's going to be a lot more fragile, and for a potential £600~ phablet, it's worrying.

BBM will stay free, just like Facebook and Twitter are free. And no, BlackBerry have not just let 40% of their workforce go. But hey, don't let fact stand in the way of a good headline.

Erm Facebook and Twitter are quite sucessful at bringing in revenue. They will most probably sell off BBM. It's there only viable service. (The userbase is the only commodity.) Everything else is loss making. They will have to try to monetise somewhere at some point. But that isn't looking likely is it...

I voted cold because this is old news

Cold. All people i know now use iOS or Android = whatsapp. BBM is dead, as well as Blackberry. Sad but true. They're overslept touch phones era. As well as Nokia.

I'm sure I herd something about bbm be encrypted, meaning only the recipient can read it ?

I have the leaked version and i must say its not all that cracking really... You have to login with your email address and that will act as your username, so no pin of any kind

blah not for windows phones either

Some of the comments are ridiculous.

Blackberry is dead, doesn't mean that some of the great features are dead or irrelevant.

Personally I think the pin system is the reason this is going to be huge.

I might even put my pin on my hukd profile

That doesn't make any sense. People buy BB purely for BBM so now that it's available on another OS it will go from strength to strength? And what happens to BB during this, assuming people will not need to buy a BB any more that is? Fading company on the way out saves itself by giving away a service available elsewhere. And who will develop for BBM once they completely lose their user base and eventually fold. If BB are intending to become a company akin to the owners of Whatsapp then they have the potential to survive but that's a mighty fall from grace.

BTW, it's free so Heat should be added unless it's of no use to you in which case why are you reading this?
