In 1965 Brian Wilson heard The Beatles album Rubber Soul, and set himself the challenge of "writing the best album ever". By this time Brian had stopped touring with The Beach Boys to concentrate on writing and producing albums, with Bruce Johnston replacing him on bass guitar and piano for the touring band. When the band came back into the studio to record the new album, Brian had already recorded a complete version of the album, and got them to play each of their instruments and vocals copying what he had already recorded for them.

Using the widest range of instruments to get his feelings into sound, Wilson had train noises, bass harmonica, harp, massive orchestration, and infinite number of unusual percussion instruments together with outstanding backing vocals, as you would expect from The Beach Boys, to create a complete wall of sound to accompany telling lyrics mainly penned by Tony Asher. Because the album was such a personal project for Brian he sings most of the lead vocals himself, which he hadn't done to this point. The result is a beautiful, yet meloncollie album.

Moving away from the sunny California sound, which had given them dozens of hits, this album is a very personal insight into the genius that is Brian Wilson. The incredible track 'God Only Knows' was the first commercial song to use the word 'God' in it. A track Paul McCartney called "the best song ever written", and later confessed that Pet Sounds proved the inspiration for The Beatles 'Sgt Pepper' album.
