Recently Octopus have allowed people to sign up to their tracker tariff again. If you are currently on a standard variable tariff rather than an old fixed rate, I believe this is the only tariff on the market at the moment that presents an opportunity to reduce energy costs below then energy price guarantee rates. The tracker tariffs follow the wholesale cost of energy which at the moment are cheaper than the cap and forecast to further reduce (theguardian.com/money/2023/jan/19/uk-energy-bills-to-fall-from-july-wholesale-gas-costs-drop). I should point out that it is possible on a tracker to end up on rates above the current EPG cap, however you are not tied into this tariff and you can switch back to the standard variable rates at any time, so providing you check rates regularly you will either save money or break even.

EPG rates differ throughout the country but if we can summarise by saying the cost of gas on a standard tariff is 10p for gas and 35p for electric then it will make the comparison of the tracker tariff easier. Below is the price of gas on the tracker tariff in the South over the last three months. Only for a handful of days on very cold days in December did the price go above the cap, otherwise it has stayed the same or has been below and I’ve averaged around 7p over that time (around 30% cheaper than the alternative)

It’s a similar story for electric rates also. Source (Octo Aid)

Can I join Octopus on the Tracker tariff?

No. You must join on the flexible tariff and later request a switch to the Tracker tariff. Some members report that they have been told this can only be requested online. However this is not true and the tariff can be changed immediately over the phone. Hang up and try again if this is your initial response. You can also email or twitter DM them.

Do I need to check the rates daily?

No not really, though you might find you do. Rates do not change significantly day to day, maybe by 1p for electric and 0.2p for gas so you’re not going to wake up one day and see that the current prices have jumped above the standard variable rates. Having an awareness of the rates by checking once a week is generally sufficient, much like you’d have for the price of petrol or the exchange rate on holiday.

See the following comment for how to get daily updates hotukdeals.com/com…779

Can I switch to a tracker tariff if I’m a Bulb customer?

No - some have speculated it might be quicker to move away from Bulb to another provider and then back to Octopus. I see no reason why this wouldn’t work.

Am I billed based on the daily rate or a monthly average?

Contrary to what Octopus seem to be telling many, if you have a smart meter that sends half hourly data then you are billed for individual usage on that day according to the daily price. I’d you do not have a smart meter and submit manual readings then you’ll be billed an average unit rate for the period. You can in theory submit daily earrings to be billed more accurately.

Where can I find todays unit rates?

These can be found in your Octopus account or the Octo Aid app will show tomorrow’s rate at around 6pm the day before (apps.apple.com/gb/…974)
Other third party websites which can be googled will show historic rates.

What does the predicted daily spend in my octopus account mean?

This is not currently accurate and should be ignored. Octopus continue to work on improving the functionality of their website.

Will I be exposed to higher prices?

We have introduced a maximum cap on Tracker prices at 100p / kWh for electricity and 30p / kWh for gas

With the Octopus Tracker, your prices are guaranteed to reflect wholesale market drops just as quickly as market increases. In the long run, trackers are usually cheaper than hedged and insured prices (hedging and insuring are not free – and consumers always pay the price in the long run).

If prices go up am I stuck on the tracker tariff?

No, if you ever want to come off the Octopus Tracker, just email hello@octopus.energyand we will move you to one of our other tariffs right away, alternatively you can switch directly in your online account. Additionally, we have introduced a maximum cap on Tracker prices at 100p / kWh of electricity and 30p / kWh for gas

What happens if I want to leave?

You just choose a different tariff on your account page, email us or phone us up, or switch to another supplier. Switching to another Octopus Energy tariff is effective next day, switching to another supplier takes their usual time. There are no exit fees.

Do I need a smart meter?

No, although it does make it easier, otherwise you need to submit monthly readings and an average for the month will be applied.

Can I get this on economy 7?

No, but you can ask your supplier to operate your meter in a single rate dumb mode.

Will I still get my energy bill support scheme payments?

Eligibility
All households with a domestic electricity connection in England, Scotland and Wales are eligible for the discount.

You’ll still get the discount if:

you change your payment method or tariff
you switch electricity supplier or move to a new address
your supplier goes bust
you’re in arrears on your electricity bill payments

What are the standing charges?
Gas standing charges are the same across all regions: 25.56 p/day + VAT

Electric standing chargers see the following link:

octopus.energy/tra…qs/

See ‘How is the price of the Octopus Tracker calculated?’

So how does the energy price guarantee apply to a tracker?

The Government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) offers a 17.9p / kWh discount against your electricity unit rates, and a 6.7p / kWh discount against your gas unit rates.

Given the money for this discount comes from every UK home, it’s important we’re fair with how the EPG is applied.

The EPG discount will apply whenever Tracker unit rates go above the base EPG level (34p / kWh for electricity and 10.3p / kWh for gas; on average, but this does vary regionally).

For example, a unit rate of 80p / kWh is reduced to 62p / kWh. A gas unit rate of 20p / kWh is reduced to 13.3p / kWh.

The EPG is also applied after the maximum unit rate cap. This offers an additional saving for Tracker customers against high wholesale unit rates.

For example, an electricity unit rate of 120p / kWh is capped at 100p / kWh, then reduced to 82p / kWh. A gas unit rate of 35p / kWh is capped at 30p / kWh, then reduced to 23.3p / kWh.

However, the EPG won’t discount unit rates below the base level.

For example, an electricity rate of 38p / kWh would only be reduced to 34p / kWh (on average). A gas unit rate of 11p / kWh would only be reduced to 10.3p / kWh (on average).

However, however... if the unit rate is already below the base EPG level (34p / kWh), then you will pay the cheaper rates.

For example, an electricity unit rate of 30p / kWh means you only pay 30p / kWh.

    Guys,

Edited... Here's a step by step instructions for switching from your current Suppliers to Octopus Energy for the Tracker Tariff.

What I like to do is help as many people as I could in saving them some money on their monthly utility bills due to the costs of living.

I just switched my gas & electric to Octopus Energy onto their Tracker Tariff - "Octopus Tracker November 2022 v1"

I am saving about 30% on both gas & electric each month!

On the EPG under the Government's Energy Price Guarantee - I am paying for both gas & electric £209.35 per month or about £2512.20 per year based on my estimated usage.

On the tracker - "Octopus Tracker November 2022 v1", I'm now paying Monthly amount: £162.09 and the Annual amount is: £1945.09. This is based on Annual usage:
    Electricity: 3,892 kWh

    Gas: 12,397 kWh

For the London region, on the "Octopus Tracker November 2022 v1" tariff - it is on 03Feb2023 (today):

    Electricity:
    Unit price: 23.10p per kWh
    Standing charge: 31.51p per day

    Gas:
    Unit price: 6.72p per kWh
    Standing charge: 26.84p per day

I contacted Octopus Energy on the 1st Feb 2023, and I will be switched over on the 4th Feb 2023 (midnight onwards).

Remember the price of gas can go up or down each day (as this is a tracker tariff) - but so far for the last 3 months, the price per KWph for both gas & electric has been below the Government Energy Price Guarantee by about 30%.

Do you want to switch and save money each month on your gas and electric bills?

This is what you need to do:

    1. Click on:

    https://octopus.energy/

    2. Sign up to the standard variable tariff - "Flexible Octopus October 2022 V1" - this is the same pricing as the fixed variable tariff you're already are on with your current Supplier - British Gas, Scottish Power, Shell Energy, etc.

Don't worry, it’s the same price as the Government Energy Price Guarantee.

    3. Put in your postcode, and your annual usage for Electricity and Gas. If unknown, select the house / flat size.

    4. Put in your bank details, etc for the Direct Debit Setup. They will take out two direct debit payments in one month, but don't worry. The monthly payments will be adjusted after 3-6 months, because you are in credit.

    5. If you have a smart meters on both your gas & electric, then meter readings will be sent over automatically when you switch over 4-5 days later.

    6. If you have no smart meters installed - then you need to give manual meter readings at the time of the switch-over. I suggest you give another meter reading once every week or once a month - whichever is easier for you. If you want an accurate bill (in getting the best pricing for each week), then once a week meter reading would be better.

This can be easily done via the Octopus Energy smartphone app in 5 seconds - giving the meter readings.

    7. Either email (hello@octopus.energy) or call Octopus Energy (on 0808 164 1088 freephone) quoting your new account number (which they will email to you after you have joined) stating that you like to change to a new tariff at the time of the switch-over. You want to change over to the tariff called "Octopus Tracker November 2022 v1".

    8. If you email on hello@octopus.energy, you should hear back within 24 hours. They should email you back, asking you - are you sure you want to change tariff?
You email back, stating "Yes, I like to change to the new tariff". Thereafter (about 24 hours later), another email confirms that it has been done. You should see a new monthly price in the email you get.

    9. Or, If you called on 0808 164 1088 freephone number (about 5-10 mins waiting time), give them your new account number and that you like to change over to the tariff "Octopus Tracker November 2022 v1". It should be done there as you are waiting on the phone within 1 min. You should see a new monthly price in the email they send out afterwards to you.

    10. Download the Octopus Energy app onto your smartphone and register a new account with them using the same email you used when you joined them.

On there, you should see the new tariff on your account - you are on saving you about 30% each month.

    11. I will be keeping an eye on the gas prices each day / week - and let you know if you need to switch again.

You can switch back to the original standard variable tariff (no exit fees) - "Flexible Octopus
October 2022 V1" - this is the same pricing as the fixed variable tariff you're already are on with your original old Suppliers - British Gas, Scottish Power, Shell Energy, etc.

By emailing them or calling them (hello@octopus.energy) or on 0808 164 1088 freephone - asking to be switched back to the "Flexible Octopus October 2022 V1" tariff immediately.

    12. About 1 month later, if you want smart meters installed (because you don’t have any) for both gas & electric (so you don’t need to worry about giving a meter reading each week), just email them asking that you like to have smart meters installed for both your gas & electric.

They will sent out the Engineers about 4-6 weeks later, when appointments are available in your area. It takes about 30 mins to do each meter, by the Engineer.

Then, you can monitor the energy usage hour by hour on the monitor screen they give you after they finish installing the smart meters.

Any questions, please let me know.

The figure is fairly irrelevant. It doesn’t matter if it was 500p and 100p. The prices haven’t exceeded 35p and 10p over the last 3 months other than when it was -10 in the UK. If prices go above 35p and 10p at ANY stage you can bail and go back to the standard variable tariff at any point. Therefore if you keep an eye on prices there is no way you’re not going to save.

If prices go up am I stuck on the tracker tariff?

No, if you ever want to come off the Octopus Tracker, just email hello@octopus.energyand we will move you to one of our other tariffs right away, alternatively you can switch directly in your online account. I’ve added an if statement so it won’t show until a certain cost.

First duplicate your shortcut by holding down on it so you don’t mess it up.
Then change the unit rate to a number and add an if statement at the bottom and a nothing. Then arrange like these pictures.

For anyone with a smart meter who’s wondering why on occasions you might be billed based on a monthly average rather than itemised daily usage it’s likely that it’s due to octopus missing some daily snapshots from your meter. In this case you’ll just get an average between two monthly readings. Octopus however can often recover this data and regenerate a bill. Below is a comparison between the two billing method. All of 20p difference. So however you’re billed, don’t stress!49827307-ExLZa.jpg49827307-ITApZ.jpg

I’ve seen a lot of people having problems, especially with the gas meter not being visible to octopus.
I’ve just found out that you can check the DCC network on the citizens advice page. They will tell you if you’re smart meter is working correctly .

You could also use a free app like “Bright” (Hilderbrand) that lets you connect to your smart meter and see the half hourly data in the app. If it connects and you get readings you know the supplier is the problem.

For SHELL customers considering the move, I've just compared the tariff that Shell moved me onto in January and the Octopus SVR is still a bit CHEAPER overall. I'm based in the East (Bedfordshire) so rates might vary by region.

So, you jump to Octopus and the switch to their equivalent SVR is costing less even if you don't move onto the tracker. I've just gone through the process and it took me 2mins to submit my switch request. They've already emailed me from Octopus and Shell confirming my switch date is 3rd Feb. If I do nothing else I'll still be slightly better off with Octopus, but my plan is to switch to the daily tracker and then pay approx one third less (as per the OPs advice).

If the prices on the daily tracker remain high after monitoring them for a few days/weeks you can just jump back to their SVR and still pay less than Shell! If a deal comes up cheaper with anogher supplier, just switch to them. No brainer. (edited)

I did the same, it only works our 4 pence a day cheaper as both charge a same capped price per KW

Nice explanation here. Provided you keep an eye on the wholesale prices it seems a no brainer. If we have another sudden cold snap in Europe like the beast from the east caused late February 22 we’ll see a jump in the price otherwise any spikes should be temporary.

Past performance is no guide to future performance and all that accepted.

Folks please read the FAQs and understand when the EPG discount is applied on the tracker tariff.

"The Government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) offers a 33.43p / kWh against your electricity unit rates, and a 6.7p / kWh discount against your gas unit rates.

The EPG discount will apply whenever Tracker unit rates go above the base EPG level (34p / kWh for electricity and 10.3p / kWh for gas; on average, but this does vary regionally)."

We are essentially on the SVR when the EPG discount is applied until the tracker unit rates are above 67.43p and 17.0p for electricity and gas respectively. That is when we will pay more than the SVR.

Note - the base EPG level will change in April.

Please note the SVR and Tracker unit rates have small variations for each region but the principle is correct.

“National Grid has asked for a coal power station to be warmed up as a heatwave is expected to boost demand for air-conditioning across Britain.

The balance between supply and demand is tight after a fault at an interconnector between Britain and Norway, which has halved normal capacity from the station.

Meanwhile, wind power generation has slumped and many power plants have halted operations for summer maintenance, when demand is usually lower.

Uniper’s Ratcliffe coal power station could connect to the grid by 2.25pm if it is needed, according to National Grid.

It comes as Britain experiences temperatures hotter than Madrid, with amber heat warnings in place across the South East and other parts of the country.”

If it helps people understand when they are better off or not with gas prices Octopus uses the Marex Spectrum price which I can't find online easily however if you look at something like tradingeconomics.com/com…gas this shows the price of natural gas in p/therm and it has a similar trend.

Based upon the West Midlands area (others areas will be different but not by too much) if it's below 252p/therm then you should be better off as that is about 10.3p/kwh.

Between 252p/therm and 437p/therm my understanding is that the governments energy price guarantee should cap you at 10.3p/kWh.

Above 437p/therm you will be paying more.

These figures aren't perfect as they base their prices on the Marex Spectrum which I can't see published but it should give you an idea and they do vary per area but they will give you an idea.

While January has been a lot lower the prices and you would have been no worse off since about September last year the prices can and have spiked higher in the past. In August last ear you would have been paying about 24p/kWh although that is before the governments EPG came into effect, with that it would have been about 17.6p/kWh.

Just to clarify for people they take the wholesale price every day and then average it over the month. The price you pay actually only changes once per month based on this average wholesale price - which is why you can give meter readings and avail this tariff rather than have to have a smart meter.

Does anyone have the calculation to bring the day ahead figures into real expected data?
I have looked at the figures on the Nordpool site for N2EX data, and can't see an accurate correlation.
I have looked at a week of figures, in GBP, and get a daily rate that is between 17.7% and 19.1% of wholesale rate. Averaging to 18.2%
On that basis, tomorrow's (Mon 20th) Southern rate should be around 20.3p for electricity.

Download Octo-Aid app and it gives you the prices for the next day. They usually appear around midday on the day before for Electricity and about 18.30 for Gas.

Do you need a smart meter to take advantage of this? How will they know how much you’ve used each day without them? Or do they just take an average over the days between meter reading submissions?
    Reebok.Ron's avatar
You may not need a smart meter but the way they're pushing smart meters on everyone you'll be forced to take one whether you like it or not. It says in their Ts&Cs that they can put you on a smart meter and if you refuse they'll switch you to standard tariff. So if, like me, you dislike the idea of being spied on and them having the ability to remotely disconnect your supply at their leisure for any reason, stay well clear. (edited)

He’s just not that good I’m afraid he advised people not to go on a fixed price before all this mess I believe

I've created a discussion on HUKD for folks that have already moved to the Octopus Tracker Tariff. It's just a forum to discuss the wholesale daily price and when to move off the tariff etc.

If anyone is interested subscribe to the discussion link below and start chatting away

Have I understood this correctly, based on a Bromley (BR2) postcode for London tariffs:

    Electricity standard flexible:
    31.51p standing charge per day
35.8p per kWh (with 33.43 EPG discount)

    Gas standard flexible tariff:
    26.84p standing charge per day
10.51p per kWh (with 6.75p EPG discount)

    So, on the Tracker:

    Gas
0p to 10.50p Will pay tracker rate - Saving money
10.51p to 17.26p Will Pay 10.51p - Same as Standard rate
17.27p to 30p Will pay tracker rate minus 6.75p EPG
30p+ Will pay 30p minus 6.75 EPG as tracker capped at 30p

    Electricity
0p to 35.79p Will pay tracker rate - Saving money
35.80p to 69.23p Will Pay 35.80p - Same as Standard rate
69.24p to 100p Will pay tracker rate minus 33.43p EPG
100p+ Will pay 100p minus 33.43p EPG as tracker capped at £1

Just wondering for those on the tracker, have Octopus since changed your direct debit amount or are you just setting your own monthly direct debit now?

As I moved from the currently higher Octopus Fixed, my direct debit amount is the same as it was and I assume because it's a tracker, Octopus won't readjust it. Just wondering what everyone else's situation is.

    Prices are creaping up
    Delboyplc's avatar
    1 The hot temperatures increased

demand for electricity from air conditioning

2 It was less windy so less electricity was generated by wind farms than usual

Maintenance on gas power stations meant less natural gas could be used

3 The electricity interconnectors between the UK and Norway had lower capacity due to a technical fault, so less electricity could be imported.

Thus meaning the wholesale price is up at the moment, don't panic

You can yes I’m on gas tracker and Go Faster. You have to call them to do it over the phone. Be sure you’re clear it’s only gas you want to change. It’ll be changed within seconds

To reply to the last few comments, without wanting to copy and paste over and over...

    To put simply:

Yes it will be cheaper for an unknown period of time. Possibly for the next year or longer. It is currently significantly cheaper. However the rate varies on a day to day basis and so nobody can say with certainty about the future.

However if it becomes consistently more expensive, then you can swap the same day back to the standard tariff (which Octopus also offer and is the same price as your current one).
