As someone who has kept bees for more than ten years and who gets requests to “come round and sort out my top bar hive” I would offer the opinion that a top bar hive is the hardest way to start. The usual consequence of that is swarming and losing (not keeping) bees, with nuisance being caused to neighbours and thus hobby beekeeping getting a bad rep. Please don’t think a top bar hive makes anything easier!

If you are interested in taking up beekeeping, get in touch with your local beekeeping club (which will probably call itself an Association, don’t let that put you off!) They will welcome interested visitors, and you’ll get a chance to experience an open hive close up before you splash your cash or invest significant time.
Most clubs provide free bees to beginner members who have taken classes, and therefore should have some understanding of how to look after them.
Maybe worth mentioning that the winter is the off season, when the bees are least demanding of attention - consequently it is when people have the time for running courses, and late Spring is when bees become available for distribution

OK, the deal book is American (things are rather different over there), lacking in important detail in many places and plain misleading in others. It would be a mistake to have it as your principal reference!
But it is free, and that’s probably a fair price! (edited)

    Top tip.
Collect the bees urine and you can use it as fuel for your car.

    I believe it's called BP.

Join a local bee keepers society, they will show you and teach you everything you need to know and more than likely set you up with your first hive at a much cheaper outlay than if you buy a hive and nuc online

What if you don't have any bees?
Then you have something to read and discuss randomly. Also if you apply to who wants to be a millionaire and get a question on bees or honey?

As someone who keeps bees in top bar hives that I made myself (Warre hives in my case), I'd thoroughly recommend this as a hobby providing you have somewhere safe and secure enough to avoid anyone vandalising your hives and avoid upsetting your neighbours too much. Definitely spend some money on a good suit/smock & gloves. You will get stung otherwise.
