You may laugh, but back in 1999, 7KG was just about as big a load you could possibly get back then.

I presumed the statement was a joke on how heavy his wife's underwear is, and therefore how fat his wife must be.

Maybe because I assumed 7KG was lots. Landlord just replaced our washer dryer, old one was 6kg, new 7kg feels pretty big. I guess maybe for families you want something bigger.

Times have changed on what constitutes a normal family sized drum. 20 years ago the average drum capacity ranged from around 4.5KG to 6KG at the upper end. When LG launched their washing machines in Europe circa 1999, I remember the 7KG capacity being touted as the world's largest.

Today a 7KG capacity is considered suited for a single person or a small family. A 9KG washer is suited for a medium family and 11KG for a large one. LG even offer a commercial 15KG model that fit within the normal dimensions of a standard washing machine.

Also check out the size of the porthole today to what they looked like 40 years ago. These days they are massive.

Too late the HUKD hitman is already auctioned
I have got a 5kg machine and 6 ppl in the family.
Just be aware that Beko's 28 minute daily quick and 17 minute super short programmes (the wash programmes I use 90% of the time) actually take longer than the times they quote because that doesn't include the time it takes to fill the washing machine with water for the wash and rinse cycles. While that happens the countdown timer on the washing machine pauses until the machine starts tumbling the clothes again, so you need to add at least 10 minutes to both those programme times for the real duration.

Does everyone just wash their clothes more? Or are clothes just bigger than 20 years ago. I have a 6kg machine for our family and it’s plenty.

Well every Sunday I like throwing the kingsize duvet cover, fitted sheet, top sheet and 4 pillow cases in as one wash, saves time, water & money.
