Just popped into the Bham city centre 99pStrore for something else but saw this. Its a typical networking cable (or Ethernet cable/RJ45 male-male) to hook your PC/Laptop to your Internet hub/modem. It's 2.1m (7ft) length and the 'e' at the end of FastCat5 means this cable transmits data at a higher speed than your typical cable (not that i along with the avg user would notice!).

You're right to say the average user won't notice - this is why it's daft to pay over the odds for what is simply a cat 5 cable. The 'e' stands for enhanced, and the main differences between cat5 and cat5e relate to the standards model applied - cat5e is slightly stricter than cat 5, but does NOT equate to noticable differences in speed. For the home user, I'm not sure why you'd want to pay more for something which won't affect you.

To be ultra-pedantic for a moment: a Cat5e cable does not transmit data at a higher speed than a normal Cat5 cable. What it means is that there will be fewer errors at the higher rates. This may or may not be an issue depending on the environment, required bitrate, length of cable etc etc.

To be even more pedantic, whats this doing in a 99p shop for a £1?

yeah you've been stitched for a penny buddy!

...and what happened to the reduction in VAT in the 99p store?

Too true. I'm doing my shopping in the 97p store from now on.
