Belkin Wireless Cable DSL Router 54Mbps + 4 Port 10/100 Switch - £21.99 delivered @ Amazon

Good price for Wifi router. Suitable for cable broadband.

Review : The Belkin 802.11g Wireless Cable/DSL Gateway Router lets users share files and a broadband Internet connection among their computers-without using networking cables. It features 802.11g technology that makes accessing files and networked peripherals-such as hard drives, printers, CD-ROMs, and DVDs-easier than ever. 802.11g technology provides you with networking speeds nearly five times faster than the current Wi-Fi (802.11b) standard. An integrated, 4-port 10/100Base-T Ethernet switch also allows you to connect wired computers to the network. 802.11g technology is the easiest wireless network to implement. The Gateway Router uses the wireless 802.11g 2.4GHz standard to offer you the widest working range-upto 1500 feet-and greater interoperability in mixed networking environments.802.11g technology is backward compatible with the 802.11b Wi-Fi networking standard, so it allows you to implement faster wireless technologies in combination with existing 802.11b Wi-Fi networks. An added Turbo Mode will isolate your network from 802.11b wireless clients and allow your network to transmit data at the highest 802.11g data rate.

Thanks for the extra info bigup

I know that the people with problems are always the ones who shout loudest but the reviews on Amazon don't inspire me with confidence.

Its a bit of shame as I was tempted with this offer.

Anyone one on here have any experience of this router??

I am looking for a solution to get wifi in my recently extended house - the original brick wall currently stops the wifi signal from my existing wifi adsl router so I cannot use it everywhere in the house.

Does this item work as a repeater to extend the range of an existing wifi router. Alternatively, would it allow me to plug an ethernet cable from an existing wifi router giving me 2 wifi routers on the same network connected by a network cable.

Cheers,

Dave.

I get the impression this is a router only, so you would need to use your existing adsl2+ modem with this router.

Anyone know if this would work with a Wii, been hearing about a lot of problems because I think Wii using wireless "G" so you have to set routers to mixed mode b/g.

I purchased one of these about a year ago. It died on me last week. I was thinking of buying a new one until a friend said that Belkin will replace it with no fuss. I lost the guarantee and receipt but will ring them when I have time. Has anyone else had experience of this great after service?

No.. you'll need a modem router

My parents have this and it's ****. It kept thinking the NTL Proxy server was giving it DoS attacks if you were downloading too quickly and then ban all internet traffic until you restarted it.

It's been alright recently though.

I bought this router last year and it was completely lousy. I convinced myself that I knew about IT and that most of the poor reviews were down to numpties. Unfortunately it is a pile of junk.

Having said that I now use DD-WRT on my linksys router and it is rock solid. So if you must buy this router I would insist you flashed with DD-WRT. However there may be some compatibility issues (]http//ww…ion) - someone else can clarify if they know.

Personally I would go for something like this - ]http//ww…221 which works out about £10 more expensive but gets very good reviews and also works with DD-WRT.

Thanks to the OP - not trying to shoot you down - It is a great price but from my experience I think ultimately you would be disapointed.

Cheers Scoobies

yes, there is no reason why it shouldn't work with the WII and your laptop.

You might want to look at home-plug networking. I have a study out at the end of the garden and use homeplug units by Devolo to get a strong steady signal without running cables down my garden. They are great things for circumventing old stone walls etc etc that defeat many wireless routers. Netgear and Linksys do some but there's a wide selection at www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk...

Bought this from PC world 2 weeks ago for £40....no probs with it whatsoever, manages laptop, desktop and internet radio connection great.

Have had one of these for nearly a year on NTL/Virgin Media with an Apple Mac and Windows laptop + base station Mac and PC, and have had no known problems!

ohh ...... and i use the Wii on it ....... s****** ...... laptops can be used all over the house and also in the garden.

IMO dealing with refunds and exchanges at PCWorld this router probably has the lowest rate of returns against the other routers in it's price point. The consensus is that this router is fairly reliable, probably the easiest to setup and is the one I recommend to customers if all they want do is surf the net and look at emails. Also it's best to think about how many walls and floors the router signal is going to have to travel through because this product is at the bottom of the current range of Belkin routers in the UK (Thus it's the least powerful) so you may have to look at the next ones up.

No, your router has a built in modem, the router in this thread is for cable customers and doesn't have built in modem, thus it's cheaper.

Is it compatable with TALKTALK?

I'm not sure about Wii but it works with a Nintendo DS Lite. I had to fiddle with the settings a bit, put Protected mode on and use WEP and not WPA. NDS is fussy with routers.

Might help someone.

You sure it wasn't the 7231?, as this has been £40 for over a year at currys.

I have my pc linked up to the internet with BT on a DSL line. Will this work for me to wire up my 360 for the live content etc. Or is there something else I need to also purchase? (apart from the wireless receiver for the 360).

Also

Can I run a network cable from this type of router or is it strictly wireless only?

Sorry if they are no brainers.....too early for me.....yawn. I think a response would not only benefit me but a few other people confused by all the jargon.

Thanks again guys!

I hope so, thats why i bought this.;-)

People who do NOT have cable broadband should look for a router with an ADSL/ADSL2+ modem in.

Unless you happen to have an existing ADSL modem with an ethernet port on it or want to add wireless to an existing wired only router.

Something like these would do for people on ADSL/ADSL2+ (i.e you get your broadband though the phoneline and not the CATV cables)

ebuyer.com/pro…244
ebuyer.com/pro…975
ebuyer.com/pro…521

Although might be an idea to check reviews first I just went for some of the cheaper ones on ebuyer as an example. ;-)

Not sure what the point of your post was, but thought I'd chime in and point out you can also play Fifa 08 online (works really well) and most of the big games coming out this / early next year will have online modes.

has anyone installed DD WRT on it, thats what I Want to do but am concerned it may still not be reliable, i'll only be using the wired part.
I have a wired netgear and the ports are going one by one, i'm down to 2 ports.

So will I need to buy the USB adaptor????

I've had 3 of these all die within 8 weeks of getting them - all with the same fault. Bought the first one from Toys-R-Us, then had 2 warrranty replacements.

I think Belkin got fed up and sent me a different router after the 3rd complaint. These units have cooling slots on the BASE of the router, so it tends to overheat and disconnects. Very poor design and very unreliable.

I've still got one on my bookshelf, it's yours for a tenner + p&P

Seriously, stay away from this model. It'll give you nothing but grief.

I'm going to go for the Buffalo model, and install Tomato Firmware, or DD-WRT on that. Looks a much safer bet, and only £10 more for two of those, than two of these.
