I'm sure I saw a purple one onsite

In what way are helmets such as this better than the supermarket ones? All seem to be the same materials. Paying a lot for the brand?

My Tesco one looks very similar to this one and many others but was recently reduced to £5.99!

I don't mind paying more for a genuinely better product but not just for a name to be stuck on it.

I have a Tesco one and my flatmate has an MET one, you can tell the difference a mile off. The Tesco one appears to be polystyrene with a bit of plastic badly glued to it, the MET one seems to all be bonded fully and just looks a lot better.

No idea if it protects ya bonce any better though!

I wouldn't put my trust in a £5.99 helmet from tesco when I'm out in the road or track

So it would work better if I paid the £8.99 full price for it? Price is absolutely no measure of effectiveness - that's the whole point of my question. This is borne out by the SHARPs tests of motorcycle helmets where £80 helmets beat £300+ helmets. I'm looking for proper objective measures, not brand prejudice. Is there any standard for cycle helmets?

These helmets meet CE EN1078 certification standards but your Tesco helmet probably meets the same or similar standard.
The biggest differences between manufacturers will probably be build quality.

Thanks. Kind of confirms my suspicions about these things. I buy a helmet for protection, not fashion.
