Reviews are not great - Material - Outer skin apparently very thin !!

May also make you look like 'The Michelin Man' in an XL..

Fantastic deal. Thanks

That's the whole point it's a jacket that looks thin but as the warmth of a thick bulky coat. My husband got this coat and we paid 90 quid which was a good price then. He took it to Jordan two years ago when it was freezing cold. I also tended to steal it from him going back and forth the school run if he left it home when he was in work, trust me it's warm even on the coldest of days. At this price I have bought myself one. Plus my husband wears XXL and Is tall and thin and I am a size 12/14 so you won't look like Michelin man like the other poster said. I ordered Xl so should be just right for me and nobody wants them tight wearing anyway.

Nice price, worth a try as free returns also. Heat added (when wearing)

Ordered thanks, have some heat.

The purpose of a mountaineering down jacket is to be warm yet lightweight. Manufacturers use the lightest fabrics they can that retain the down whist providing the appropriate level of durability. That level is determined by how light the user wants it to be. Some jackets are even made with ultralight 10 denier fabric.

Although, that said, this isn't really a high end mountaineering jacket.

Good stuff, I want to be warm while looking like a Michelin man but also be able to move like I am not the Michelin man!!

I think what ceejay was getting at was the outer layer is very thin. Everyone knows the principle of down is that it's light yet warm, it sounds like the outer isn't very durable. I'm afraid I'm with another commentator, unacceptable to use down while the harvesting practice continues. Man made equivalents (Pertex) are more expensive but are almost as warm per gram, recycled material and importantly in the UK effective still when it rains which is the major downside to down.

I understand your reservations about down harvesting; I'm not sure where Berghaus source theirs from but some outdoor companies do have an ethical policy. I also get where people are coming from about the fabric but a jacket like this isn't necessarily designed to be used for everyday wear in the UK, it's intended as an extra warm layer in cold, dry conditions for specific activities. Because of that the fabrics used are as light as possible with the corresponding compromise in toughness.

I love the talk about being suitable for mountaineering, most people who buy this just probably swan around in tesco and the coldest climate they go to is the freezer section. (_;)
