Really good book, detailing the final moments leading up to the fall of Berlin during the Second World War.

Synopsis
The Red Army had much to avenge when it finally reached the frontiers of the Reich in January 1945. The result was the most terrifying example of fire and sword ever known, with tanks crushing refugee columns under their tracks, mass rape, pillage and destruction. Hundreds of thousands of women and children froze to death or were massacred because Nazi Party chiefs, refusing to face defeat, had forbidden the evacuation of civilians. Over seven million fled westwards from the terror of the Red Army.

Antony Beevor reconstructs the experiences of those millions caught up in the nightmare of the Third Reich's final collapse, telling a terrible story of pride, stupidity and revenge, but also one of astonishing endurance, self-sacrifice and survival against all odds.

Reviews
'Lives up to all his fans' expectations . . . gripping and harrowing'
Max Hastings, Sunday Telegraph

'A masterpiece of modern historical writing'
Michael Burleigh, Guardian

'Powerful and beautifully written . . . even better, in my view, than Stalingrad'
Andrew Roberts, Mail on Sunday

'Really is as good as they say it is'
Anne Applebaum, Evening Standard

Hope it helps someone.

Stalingrad is a stunning read as well, a very important chapter in the Second World War, I would argue the single most defining battle in the war.
Have read this and Stalingrad. If you are into this genre these are superb and authoritative reads and 99p is a bargain. Hot

I'm reading the Beevor one. I'm only about half way through but it's been a good read so far. Very detailed.
Thanks op, ordered
Grossman was an eyewitness to much of this on the Soviet side and on the basis of objectivity and broad research I would take Beevors work as a much better and informed historical account.

Indeed, I read about him a little and on one hand he's highly qualified to talk about it however he'd definitely be prejudiced which is understandable. Apparently he died before his book was published and the Russians suppressed him and his work? I've bought the Beevor book as well as this Berlin one. I'm looking forward to some excellent reading when I'm on holidays in a couple of weeks :-) Thanks very much for your reply.
There's a documentary on Channel 5 on Saturday evening about Stalingrad if anyone is interested too...

Showing up as 5.49? Anyone with the same issue, thanks
Great read. Such a beautiful ending. Hope I haven't offended anyone.
The only problem I find with Kindle versions is that the maps can be very hard to read.

Thx to OP for Ch5 Stalingrad headsup.
