Good price,

Bet the quality wont be that great thou. You'd be better spending a bit more on a decent cable

Does quality of the lead matters with digital signal? I thought it was only distance. 5m is awfully long; you would really only want it if you needed it.

i'v been told the longer the cable lower the quality gets? and the shorter the cable better the pic quality? is that true?

There is almost no difference between a poundland cable and a £100 monster cable, as its a digital signal it eithers works or does'nt, As for length there is only a noticable loss of quality on lengths around 20m+

HDMI are all the same and all up to the same standard. However the pictured is the same type that I had to replace as they simply pull/split apart you are better off getting a sealed plastic unit and the best and cheapest place I found was here:

Getting great what HIFI scores.

Only with analogue cables, DVI/HDMI encodes data a different way so that instead of a gradual degradation of picture quality you tend to see fairly intrusive blips in the picture when the data isn't arriving as intended.

For correct transmission quality does matter as well as length, a poor quality cable will start 'losing' data at shorter distances than a higher quality one. I wouldn't have thought 5m would be much of an issue though as it's still fairly short.

I'm useless at this sort of thing - can anyone tell me if this is what I need to connect my laptop to my TV and if not, what would do the job?

Has the laptop got a HDMI socket?
google HDMI image if you don't know what the socket look like

thanks looking one

Thank you, why didn't I think of that!
I'm more confused now. I've been looking for images on google. The TV is a new LG (not from Pixmania!) with loads of different sockets.
But I havn't got a HDMi socket on my laptop but instead I have got either a VGA or a RGB socket - I can't tell which it is because they look the same to me. It has 3 rows of 5 holes slightly off-set and a set of screws on either side. I suppose I need to get a VGA or RGB connectorfrom the laptop.
I know the quality won't be up to much but is there any point in getting HDMi at the TV end?

Just get a VGA cable (male to male) and you will be able to connect your laptop to your LCD tv. It's like having a very big monitor. I have my laptop connected to a 32" LCD tv and get a brilliant picture with both, movies and surfing/office work. You would need a separate audio cable 3.5" (male to male) for the sound, or you could just plug-in a headphone to your laptop (that's what I do). I have a 5m VGA cable, so I can have the lappy next to me when I watch movies and don't need a remote control.

Thanks so much, I'll go tomorrow and try to find the right one!

They are easy to find, there are loads on e-bay & Amazon.
Had a look on Amazon, not sure how long you want the cable, but here is a] link for a cable that's 5 meters for under £6.

There are lots of other VGA cables there, some are cheaper too, but I just linked that one as that's the type I was using when I was using a vga cable.

Thanks, got one from Stak.com in the post this morning. Works a treat.
