Lidl's ' Queen Margot Whisky is an 8 Year Blended Scotch Whisky has scooped the title of 'Best Scotch Whisky' at this year's World Whiskies Awards, triumphing over bottles such as Johnnie Walker Black Label, which retails at more than double the price.

Forty experts tasted whiskies from across the globe before awarding Lidl's bottle the top accolade. The Queen Margot whisky is 'mellowed for eight years in oak casks to give a smooth texture and a warm finish. With soft aromas of dried apricot and plum, the whisky has a rich sweetness and depth of flavour'.

I reckon it's worth a shot!

As always, exercise caution with the ridiculous "best whisky in the world" headlines.

A. your taste may vary
B. it was only voted best in it's category, for this year (blended Scotch 12yrs or less?)
C. it's completely and totally obviously not the best overall whisky in the world, in anyone's opinion, ever

I read about this. I’m a bourbon drinker if I buy a spirit, but I might have to try this
Ain’t ‘best’ if the label wasn’t designed by Sir Peter Blake; the only stuff i drink!

Blended no thanks

There's are blends out there, company's like compass box are worth a look and don't compare to Bells etc.
There is a story in the Star that says, "At the World Whiskies Award, Lidl’s product earned the coveted Best Scotch Whisky. It beat pricier bottles, including Johnnie Walker Black Label."

Not "best in category". Is this national newspaper's reporting incorrect?

Theres no way either this or Johnnie Walkers black label came anywhere near a Best Scotch whiskey award. If they have I would have no confidence whatsoever in these awards.

I have just been looking around at the World Whiskies Awards 2018 website and I don't see this anywhere.... Is it another "World Whisky Award"?

Did it possibly win in 2019 and they haven't updated their website yet?

Answer is in the question!

Foolish.

Depends entirely what is in the blend. Blend does not always equate to a Bells and Grants type quality.

Mix a 20 year old Macallan with a 20 year old Brora and you have what has to be called a blended whisky.

Mixing two single malts isn’t the same as a blended whisky from 10/20/50 sources.

Nope, the question is in the question. The answer is possibly yes to that question. If you're going to be a smart alec, you first have to be smart....

I'm not disagreeing with you, as there are some stunning blends out there, but two or more single malts would be a vatted whisky, a blend includes more than one type (so a single malt and a grain whisky, for example). As someone else mentioned, Compass Box and others do some reasonably priced blends, JW Green, Gold and Blue are excellent as well.

So you don't see why a web page labelled "2018 awards" might not be up-to-date with the 2019 awards? "The answer is in the question" is a well worn phrase that I have heard often, and it means exactly what I meant to say in this instance.

Agreed. But most people (like the OP of the comment) see only one word...Blend.

the below link gives as consise a description as you are likely to find.

yes, it's incorrect. World Whiskies Awards doesn't even have a "Best Scotch Whisky" category. you can check the 2018 winners here.

it get annoying when people read this stuff, then decide that all whisky over £20 isn't worth buying because the "best in the world" is a cheap blended malt from Lidl. the Star, and every other tabloid will literally print lies if it suits them. sometimes they don't even read their sources properly, but all of this is fine, because their intention isn't to actually give people accurate and useful information anyway.
Paint stripper, Aldi Highland Black is superior.

I get home and YouTube has the whisky tribe review a compass box today.
Just got my wife to get me a bottle. £14.99 now. heat for when it was 13.49 tho.
Think I will buy a bottle tomorrow just to try.
Single malts are lovely but a bit wasted on me as I drown it in ginger ale
My favourite is Bushmills irish - absolutely delicious.
Horrible whisky , gives me terrible heartburn, it's like drinking lighter fluid
cold? never for this price
Good Whisky is coming :-)

Personally cut and melted the seal back in place on a 500$ bottle and replaced it with a similarly priced poor man's blend. Sat back and watched my moms rich friends swirl it around and talk about the subtle aroma and advanced floral palette it displayed. Very funny indeed because only I knew , it's like a placebo , once you pay a grand for a bottle and place yourself on a pedestal and you convince yourself your I mean the whiskey is superior.

so what, because in your fake story, your mom's friends can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive whisky, no whisky is worth more than £20?

i like all sorts of whiskies, for all sorts of prices; what's your problem?
