This is the cheapest GTX 260 I've seen, and it's not the cheapest one everywhere else, it's £266 on ebuyer.com

Good card for the money

Delivery only but its free.

This version usually has Far Fry 2, 3dMark Vantage and a torch bundle too, not sure about PC World though!

Don't think Quidco works on this

Hot!!!!

Hotter than Far Fry 2;-)

Hot Deal !

I got Far Fry 1, it's great!

nVidia sucks. Bad customer support. Bad drivers.

This is not the 216 Core version

not as good as the 280, can get that for £290 lol

is this better than the 4870 1gb?

might be a good price for this card but still can't vote hot as its such poor value for money.. sub £100 cards can run anything really.

Bias fanboy, bad customer support from nvidia? wrong, they dont actually sell you the cards, you buy them from EVGA, BFG, XFX etc.. which has nothing to do with nVidia's support.

Also, I got my 4850 512MB for £99 with a tagan power forge i sold for £5, so £94 for a 4850 which can run crysis very well

^Agree with Peter. Anything with a huge customer base seems to get targeted nowadays.

I still don't understand why people go out and pay £300 for a graphics card just to play a game! It just seems to be an unbelievable amount of money (price of quite a good full PC these days) for a single card.

Is PC gaming that good? Does it run rings around Playstation3 graphics to warrant paying more than the cost of the PS3 just for the graphics card?

I also notice that the prices depreciate fast on the cards, you pay £300 one week and 2 weeks later you can get the same card for £180, a month later the card manufacturer brings out the NEW SUPER DOOPER version and your card is now worth about £75!!

PC gaming is far more superior to console gaming, yes. However, it does cost a pretty penny to keep up.

And PeterStoba - you appear to be venturing far

PC gaming graphically does run rings around a PS3, if backed up with the expensive hardware.

That said, my £100 4850 card runs Crysis on high with no problems, and fallout 3 looks better than on the PS3 with my card.

A playstation 3 costs £300 whats the difference?

Yes it really does run rings round a PS3, it looks fantastic and mouse + keyboard is by far the best control method for a shooter.

Yes prices depreciate just like they do in all technology. If you had that attitude you would never buy anything. Also it is generally a 6 month product cycle not 2 weeks.

you cant run crysis on max settings and high res though, and if you think you can you are wrong.

Probably not. ]Custom PC (magazine) did a huge graphics card test in the latest issue (56) where they compare basically all of the gaming graphics cards out at the moment from Nvidia and ATI.

They tested them at three different resoloutions and in four games, Crysis Warhead, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and X3.

The ATI Radeon 4870 1GB produced higher frame rates than the 192 stream processor Nvidia GTX 260 in every game except Far Cry 2. Even still, the 4870 still achieved a playable FPS of 41 when running at 1680x1050 2x AA.

However personally, i'd sacrifice the few FPS and still go for the GTX 260 for several reasons:

It's a much better card for [email protected] as (according to CPC) it produces 5760ppd rather than the measley 3481ppd produced by the 4870 1GB, and since i'm not a huge gamer but an avid Folder, it'd be a better option.

Also, i'd choose the GTX 260 becuase it supports CUDA; a programming language that allows stuff like PhysX to run on the GPU (a feature that is starting to be implemented in games such as Mirrors Edge.

And the last reason i'd get the GTX 260 is because its about £40-50 cheaper than the 4870 1GB.
Hope this helps.

agreed, most games are multiplatform so having a graphics card 5x as fast as a PS3 is fairly pointless, until the next generation of consoles appear and developers will really use it. just save your money and play everything on high instead of ultra..

Yeah, I get around

great price for a good card but i'd be tempted to spend £25 more on a card that it slightly faster ]http//ww…868. I doubt i would though always had NVIDIA cards and it negotiable if its worth spending the extra £25.

note on £100 cards may play a lot of games but not on high settings and as smoothly, these high end cards do require higher end PSU as well as larged cases with better airflow.

Voted hot! Great card but i wasn't very impressed by Far Cry 2. Played it a few days and haven't touched it since.

No the hd4870 1gb is the better card performs better in nearly all games also runs cooler and comes with 1gb ddr5, also it is a cheaper card normaly retails at £199 - £200 the gtx 260 around £230

I bought my hd 4870 from ebuyer it cost £199 and am really happy with it before that i had a 8800 gtx and the hd 4870 just wipes the floor with it....

kamion;3842949

No, thats ATI .

Clearly you have never purchased a card from BFG.
And in response to the guy who cant justify spending a PS3's amount of money on a graphics card..... thats why you have a console
Being a big gamer I own a 360, a PS3 and have a high end PC, im not boasting, I just think you should hear this.
Consoles have become mass market, its a 1 off buy, and it will play any game thats released.
Take Crysis for example. Google the reason it has not been released on PS3 or 360 ... they cant play it.. too graphically intense.
PC's give much greater cutomisation. Most of my mates cant afford an expensive PC, so I play games via Xbox or PS3...

BFG also offer a "step up" program, you have upto 60 days to send this card back and upgrade to a better card and only pay the difference.

I have the core 216 OCX version of this card, a 22" tft, and run all my games at max res.

People often loose touch with reality when comparing GFX cards, some will spend an extra £50 or £60 just to gain a few extra fps.
Sad really when you think that ATI cards are better in some games, and Nvidia cards are better in others.

Bottom line, brilliant card, and it will play all modern games.

The advantage of this over the 4850 is that this card supports CUDA, which means dramatic improvements in render time when working with certain mpeg files. Whilst this will mean nothing to the majority of you, if you edit video then this is a good price for a good piece of kit.

But that's want people want - decent graphics at full HD resolutions on a decent screen around 24", not a gaping huge one designed for TV

Plus GPUs are now using CUDA and other technologies to make complex calculations, much in the way that [email protected] works - it's absolutely fantastic in terms of every day tasks like video and music encoding.

There are PLENTY of games that are simply not found on all platforms though - many are exclusives for a very good reason.

Jesus what have I done!

Let's just say it's good if you're on a budget or need another for SLI!

I dont get why you people are saying an hd 4870 is more expensive you can get them for £199 they come with 1GB DDR 5 that alone is worth an extra tenner,

the gtx 260 is normally more expensive! and not as good also this is the regular 260 not new core and doesn't come close to an hd 4870 in terms of performance as the hd 4870 out performs againt an gtx 280 in some tests.

do some reading people here is a good place to start anandtech.com/vid…415

Would this be because they are more expensive? You've even said so yourself! Even though they might be better, it is still more expensive. You won't find a 4870 at PCW for £200!

An option is a 4870 512MB from Pixmania, working out at around £157 after Quidco and the £5 discount. Without Quidco it would be £163.

Personally I can't decide what I need.

If you don't decide you won't buy... you'll wait till the next gen of cards... lol I did any how.

Good price for this card, questionable whether a serious gamer would be better with this or a 4870 though. Personally I think the best bang for buck is always at around the £100 level, normally the base model of the top of the range series of cards. The best time to buy is just as the new range gets released and the reviews confirm whether Nvidia or ATI have made the better product. The price for the new cards doesn't move much till the replacements arrive, then they drop by at least a third. This probably means a wait till April though so not ideal for everybody.

Currently the 4850 is were the more economical gaming money is being spent. There are only a few games this can't comfortably run at max everything on the highest common monitor resolution of 1920x1200. Most people don't even have a monitor that runs at that resolution, never mind the fact that paying £100 to increase the settings in 4-5 games is far from shrewd spending.

I follow a regular upgrade path instead of buying the best cards. This time I upgraded my 8800GT with a 4850 on release, I will then will replace it with the next generation in 4-6 months time. The card you will get for £100 then will be far better than the £200 cards now and you will probably get £50 back for your 4850. It costs me £50 every 6-12 months, but my system is always plenty healthy for the latest games.

My other recommendation to save money and make your gaming better is to connect the PC to a HD TV or Projector. Rather than getting het up with the idea of running your games at 1920x1200 run them at 720P. This is the same resolution as the 360 and PS3 run at, but the textures and affects are noticeably better on most multi platform games. By dropping the resolution, my 4850 can then run anything at max or very close. Running games at better settings looks much nicer than high resolutions, 720P is plenty to look nice and HD and you can't beat a big screen for immersive gaming.
