Let's party like it's 2011.

Never bought anything from them that didn't either break or become unusable, your choice, personally I'd stay well clear of this lot

Prices are rediculous in store and on their site even on "sale" items, I'm surprised they haven't gone into administration.

Maplin are the Tandy of 2014.....similar product range & unfortunately a similar flawed business model.

Went in today & they were selling a telescope for £89.99 ....... the exact same make & model is on sale at Currys for £49.99

^^ true post this - I've never bought anything from Maplin / but have used there website several times to get what I need - elsewhere and cheaper ;-)

999kernow - come to think of it I have to agree with you! I was going to ask why this was so cold, however I get it. The staff @ my local are useless - ask a question and they reply with "did you check the web site", or "it's available on the web site". I use CPC for the majority of my electronics needs....;)

The staff at maplin are a joke! They are often very clueless about electronic components which they sell. Oh and also rip off prices on most items

Did your Turkey go down the wrong way or something.............

over priced junk

Mostly overpriced unless you get lucky on old stock clearance or stack discounts. This sale is terrible though.

Last time I checked they even charge about a fiver just for their catalogue!

I find Maplin's email-shots quite useful.
They alert me to new and interesting gadgets which I can then search for on ebay at half the price.......

I agee with the previous comments about component buying too, most of the stock is online only, and often no "electronics" knowledge in the sales staff. Tandy swamped the true high street component stores back in the 70's and now Maplin are continuing the drive to mail order.

Heat, some great bargains there!

Ridiculous prices. Hdmi cable £8. Poundland £1.

Your choice.

Bulk of stuff is overpriced but the occasional bargain like the nilfisk e pressure washer I bought out the temperature controls soldering station at £20.

darn auto correct. Or not out. Agree on clueless staff and have called them out several times by saying if you don't know what you are talking about just say so instead of trying to advise me.

Not at all. I don't like the company one bit, I am not wishing ill of the people in it, just the company.

To charge an exorbitant fee for goods in the hope that the person who wants a standard accessory, or whatever, has no idea of the true cost.
A true instance of a 'rip off'. Dress their stores up as cheap electronics outlet to reassure the unwary mum who needs a usb cable, or the businessman who needs that iPhone lead, and then WHAM hit them with a 1000%+ mark up.

On the whole, overpriced tat of the highest order, but on occasion a gem sneaks through. Grabbed a Corsair case for £60 the other day and got a £5 voucher to now put towards a CPU cooler which is also current at around normal price. Shocked, I tell you.

They actually had a half decent sale on a few months back. It was 3 for 2 on tools and most of them had around 70% off with free delivery. Apart from that one time, I've never seen a deal from them.

so it's not right to do business now is it?

how many other companies have a rip off markup do you think?

who pays for store fittings, stock, rent, rates, staff?

Are you a half wit?

Where did I say I was against business? I said I did not approve of how they did business, it's shocking to try and fleece every penny out of unsuspecting folk instead of giving a fair product at a fair price. Many other companies manage to trade with all the overheads you quote, yet still manage to trade fairly.

Rogue builders drive around looking for victims that they may point out their roof needs doing at a much increased rate than normal. These people are just doing 'business' shall we approve of this too? They have overheads.

Men come and ask people if they want their drive tarmacing then do a shoddy overpriced job. These are just doing business, they have overheads.

Having a shop door on the high street does not mean you have instant credibility

Remember asking why the Apple TV was marked up at £119.99 when Apple sold it then for £99.99 and the guy said 'that's our price!' Same plank also then instead of dealing with a simple refund ended up wasting 30 mins of my time by trying to be clever with gift cards to offset a return vs a new purchase.

They do employ a lot of people so I'm all for business, but the lack of knowledge is shocking and pricing on some stuff is disgusting.

Maybe maplins is the next store to go into administration

How much do you bet? I reckon nothing. No balls.

Sorry to ask if you was a half wit, it was only meant as a little joke, I had no idea that it would hit so near the mark.

To associate Apple products and designer gear with Maplins, diddycot tarmac workers and fly by night roofers means our little parley must come to a dignified end due to you not really worth bothering with.

I feel Currys PC World is more of a con. Watchdog uncovered them conning customers into saying that expensive HDMI cables have better audio and video quality than cheap cables, when the quality is the same - they are probably all made in the same Chinese factory, just different branding. Currys PC World are clueless on most of the items they sell, and they rip you off like crazy with their so called Knowhow guarantee. Stay well clear from them.
