Big impact, low cost, minimum time & effort tips, tricks and ideas to prep your garden for Easter and Summer

The weather is getting a bit better now and Easter weekend is actually looking like its going to be quite nice with Friday, Saturday and Sunday getting to the dizzy heights of 20 degrees plus! I don't know about you, but I have kind of neglected the garden since last October and I'm now starting to panic a bit as I want to enjoy my time off and the weather but I can't face a mammoth task either. So, I thought I would put together a few simple to do, low cost, big impact and minimal time and effort tips, tricks and ideas to inspire you to get your garden and outdoor space looking presentable in time for the long Easter weekend and hopefully scorchio summer.

I always say I'm going to get organised and plant seeds and bulbs but never get round to it so the easiest and quickest way to add a splash of colour and interest to your outdoor space are pre-planted hanging baskets and pots or if you have some planters already, plant them with some bedding plants.

20% off ALL outdoor plants at B&Q until Monday 22nd

Primrose Planted Container - 23cm £2 at Homebase
If you have decking they look great dotted at intervals along the edges or either side of a patio or back door too.
3215149.jpg

Trailing Pansy Hanging Basket - 25cm £4 Homebase
Really cheap for a ready planted hanging basket and instant Spring colour. You can hang them on walls if you have a small back yard you don't need to necessarily have them either side of a doorway or entrance.
3215149.jpg

Resin Grey Sausage Dog Planter £18 from Dunlem
I really love these Sausage Dog resin planters from Dunelm - they are £18 but they are quite big and would look really great by your front door with some pansies, primroses or daffodils in.
3215149.jpg

2 x 30cm Topiary balls with hanging chains £15 at Argos
Ultimate in maintenance free gardening! Artificial box topiary ball spheres with hanging chains so you can attach them to hanging basket brackets. No watering needed and they never die or loose their colour - winner!

72 Summer Plant Lucky Dip plant plugs at Thompson & Morgan for £7.95 delivered
Thanks to @mickanddot

If you have any fences, sheds, wooden trellis, planters or benches that are looking a bit worse for wear, give them a coat of specialist wood paint in a bright colour which will instantly make it look better. All timber care, exterior and masonry paint is 3 for 2 at Homebase Thanks to @jeetez and includes the tester pots so if you have a few, get 3 in different colours and only pay for 2.
Cuprinol Garden shades are £1.99 each so you can get 3 x 50ml tester post with brushes on for £3.98 or 1 litre pots are £11.50 each or 3 for £23 if you have bigger areas to cover >> Cuprinol Shades 3 for 2 at Homebase

If you go to the Cuprinol wesbite, they have a tool that shows you what colours look like on sheds, fences, planters, arbours and wooden furniture which is really good to give you an idea. Just select the item you want to see it on then the colour and it changes - quite addictive really >> Cuprinol Shade Selector

If like me you have decking, it will be a bit slimey and slippery after being left over the winter so to save scrubbing it for hours just go over it with the jet washer. You don't need a special accessory to do it but if you have the patio attachment it gets into the grooves of the decking.

Titan 1.8kW Pressure washer with 2 year guarantee and patio accessory £69.99 at Screwfix
3215149.jpg

After cleaning it, paint on some anti slip decking stain. They do clear if you don't want to change your decking's natural colour or you can get them in different colours too which are really effective at bringing tired looking decking back to life.
Currently on offer in Screwfix for 2 x 2.5 litre tins for £16 in clear, slate, silver birch, dark mahogany (Think David Dickinson), country oak, teak or ash

Anti-slip decking stain 2.5l at Screwfix 2 for £16
3215149.jpg
My top tip for staining decking is to get the biggest brush that you can that will fit in the tin so you don't have to mess about transferring it into other containers you can just dip it straight in and off you go.

Hard landscaping sounds really daunting but it really isn't and you can make a big impact with hardly any time. We had crazy paving and starting digging it up but it was soul destroying and taking up so much time and effort. We bought some rolls of heavy duty weed membrane (Heavy duty is best as if you buy the thinner stuff you buy cheap you buy twice), laid them on top of the crazy paving then covered them in some plum slate. Instantly looked 100 times better and I love the colours of the plum slate when its wet too.

Apollo Heavy Duty Weed Control Fabric 1 metre wide 14 metres long £10.99 a roll at Screwfix
3215149.jpg

Homebase have 4 for 3 mix and match across all compost, top soil, bark & gravel until 6th May. Great for paths, borders and rockeries.

40mm size plum slate bag of 22.5kg £7.50 each / 4 for £22.50 / 90kgs
3215149.jpg

The same principle works with borders. I don't know about you, but I can think of a lot better things to be doing that weeding when there is gin to be drunk! Weed over the border or area that you want to work with.

Ikea have a family offer on at the moment for a set of Grasmaro 3 piece gardening tools for £3 instead of £3.75 and they come on a ring holder so they won't get lost in the back of the shed either.

GRÄSMARÖ 3-piece gardening set Red £3 Family members price at Ikea
3215149.jpg

Put the weed membrane down on top of the weeded border or area and use scissors to cut hole's for existing plants and poke them through.
3215149.jpg

When you've covered the area in weed control fabric, top with bark. This will look really good and stop the weeds coming through. In future you can just cut extra holes in the fabric to add extra plants in.

90 litres of Play Safe Grade Bark Chippings £7 each or 4 bags for £22 / £5.50 each at Wickes
3215149.jpg

If you already a garden furniture set, you can make it look newer and up to date by adding some coloured cushions. These come in loads of different colours and have a water repellent coating and can be wiped down if the kids get sauce or chocolate all over them. Price start at £4.99 delivered for brown, green, stone and the rest are £6.97 delivered for all other colours and patterns. 45cm / 18" square.

Waterproof Garden 18" / 45cm square cushions from £4.99 delivered at eBay sold by Matching Warehouse
3215149.jpg

You could get a new parasol for your existing set if your's is looking a bit weather beaten and faded. Best price I have found for parasols is Asda George with the 2.4m versions £30 with £2.95 delivery and the 2.7m ones for £40 with £2.95 delivery. Both versions come in 4 different colours - Navy, Linen, Green or Charcoal and they all get good reviews as well.

2.4 metre parasol £30 + £2.95 delivery 4 colours at George Asda

2.7 metre parasol £40 + £2.95 delivery 4 colours at George Asda

3215149.jpg

You can also a bit of interest to your outdoor space with a fire pit or basket or a chimenea. As the nights are cooler, light a fire in these and watch the sun go down with a beer or glass of wine or toast some marshmallows with the kids.

Bulb Firebasket with ash catching plate £29 at Dunelm
3215149.jpg

La Hacienda Small Clay Chimenea 67cm tall £19.93 at Homebase
3215149.jpg

If your old garden furniture set is past its best and you are looking for a new one, there are lots of offers on at the moment.

The Helsinki Bistro range at Dunelm comes in 4 different colours including orange, bronze, navy and white strip and black and white stripe. They fold down flat for storage and transport and are ideal for smaller spaces or maybe a balcony?

Helsinki Bistro Range £39 at Dunlem
3215149.jpg

6 piece powder coated patio set from Wilko £65 or add £4 for delivery
3215149.jpg

Alexandria Rattan Effect 3 Seater Corner Garden Sofa Set with glass coffee table included £200 at Homebase

Argos Home Newbury 4 Seater Wooden Patio Set £89 with £5 voucher back at Argos

I got mine from homebargains. Fraction of the cost of garden centres and has worked just as well. If you need a lot of bark, see if you have a tree surgeon nearby. Ours has a mountain of chippings outside with a sign saying help yourself. Might not be as pretty as garden centre stuff but free looks beautiful to me. Once the flowers are out, you don't notice.
Great post OP, love it but still won't inspire me to get off my backside & sort my garden out... nah think I'll leave it till next spring😜

Thanks OP you've inspired me to get up off my arse over Easter & sort out the decking.

You can do yes, we didn’t pin ours down due to the weight of the gravel but you can get pegs like this to hold them in the ground

Off topic maybe. Any recommendations for weed killer with moss killer? Any good deals on at the moment? Is now a good time to apply?

If it's your lawn:

Evergreen complete 4 in 1 has done me well for years to complete everything in one pass. I always start the spring with a one off treatment off Maxicrop Lawn Moss killer, rake the moss out after a few days and use Evergreen to boost the growth.

What a great post, that must have taken quite a bit of time and effort to put together so thank you for a nice inspiring thread.
Excellent post! Looking at staining a large fence. Must be 25-30 x 6ft with gaps between each plank. Any suggestions? Want a stain to make fence darker (but not too dark) but still see the natural wood patterns if that makes sense?
Excellent post. Thanks for the effort put into putting this together. It's very helpful and much appreciated. Have some heat 🔥
