This is a great free app that lets you record and then identify birds in your garden or vicinity. It then gives you links to more information about them and also what sort of birds are local to you. Great for all ages

record a file using the internal microphone of your Android device and an artificial neural network will tell you the most probable bird species present in your recording. We use the native sound recording feature of smartphones and tablets as well as the GPS-service to make predictions based on location and date. Give it a try! Please note: We need to transfer the audio recordings to our servers in order to process the files. Recording quality may vary depending on your device. External microphones will probably increase the recording quality.

Downloaded this last week and I've been addicted to it. It's like pokemon for middle aged duffers like me.
Doesn't work on my Wife when she is chirping away!
There's an article here from my local natural history society on seven Apps available for identifying all aspects of wildlife, one of which is BirdNET!

Just tried it and it's brilliant picked up a dove and identified it straight away

Just downloaded Thank you 😃
PlantNet also very good
Been using this for some time now and found it very good. Sometimes doesn't give an immediate result if mobile signal is poor but you can replay back home if you saved the recording.

Super strange that! Google Lens is great btw for image recognition.
Love this app. Try talking whilst recording
Been using this all lockdown on our walks. Brilliant and scarily accurate!
Great app for identification, amazing that it's free thanks to research. The foundation is there to train AI on birds worldwide but I guess the cost of processing power stops it being created.

Yes to PlantNet - it's a great app.

Thanks OP.
Top app. Very useful, enjoyable and addictive. Sees us taking a 'get away from tech' walk in our local woodland holding a mobile phone in front of us XD.
Love the ability to retrospectively choose for analysis the exact bit of your recording that contains the bird song you want.
Anyone Tweeted this offer.

Recorded a bird walking past me but she didn't show up on their server list...
Good and no ads!

Tested the app in Essex. It went crazy.
Try getting app to identify you doing a bird impression!

Thanks for the link. Found some cool other apps. We live next to woodland so very useful.
Not on IOS?
Great app, used on my last holiday in Costa Rica,
Don't leave home without it.
Now I have an app to tell me which species are annoying me at sunrise...is there an app to show me how to cull them
Hardly a deal, its been free for ages.
I'll re-tweet this. Thanks....
Is this available on iPhone?
deathwishdave03/06/2020 00:02

nope,

there are a few alternatives - however having been trying a few out over the last few weeks, they are all crap.

Birdnet (which I borrow my girlfriends p20 for) works far better than any iOS app. Considered moving to android for it hah
Just gave this a go... it's really good.
Is this not always free?

I downloaded it last year free.
It's been free for a while. I am suspicious about some of the identification and really need to get an opinion from an ornothologist mate once I can get to the pub! :-)
