Rather not use one, though. They're not the safest machines.

Typical I got this from Amazon last week at £129
Its really good, we usually use a VAX for spills etc but for small areas and upholstery this is much easier to use.
Good deal
Just ordered for collection at our local Argos in Sainsburys for the next time I go for essentials . Heat added and Thanks for sharing Woops
It is very good price. When I bought my rugdoctor spot cleaner I was hesitating between this one and the rugdoctor.
I went for rugdoctor because reviews and professionals say this will break in no time as made of cheap plastic. Particularly the head part will break.

I own a cleaning company. A good product to use is Prochems smoke and odour neutraliser.
Buy this, return unopened to Amazon for a refund.
does anyone know if I can rent one of these?

I don’t fancy buying it, if it doesn’t do the job
and I don’t think they’ll let me return it used

you'll prob struggle to rent one in the present climate, i got one for the other half and the results are very good ( not for large areas but if your stuck indoors im sure a sofa for example could be managed )

yeah I mainly wanted it for sofa + 2 chairs, but I was thinking for a medium bedroom carpet too

I just didn’t know what would be best out of this and the rug doctor, which is why I thought renting would be best, but yeah you make a good point
Oos
I have a precursor to this, Bissel little green... had it for about 6 years now and with 2 cats, a catflap and cream carpets it gets used at least once a month on "accidents" or muddy paw prints. Without it, the carpet would have stains and all sorts, its an impressive little device. Normally just use it with vax carpet shampoo. Used it in the car, the sofa, carpets, rugs etc. Combined with the big vax carpet washer we have its saved us from having to replace the carpets for sure.

If you have pets or i'd imagine youngs kids this thing is awesome to have around.

I bought a bottle of rug doctor solution for a end of tenancy clean, I've been wondering this too. Not sure what my best option is now, either struggle and do it manually or buy this for the high traffic areas.

Highly unlikely to get charged over £100 for carpets on end of tenancy so this would be a waste of money, its mostly classed as wear and tear and Landlords are expected to replace carpets every 5 years anyway.

This or the Rug Doctor spot cleaner? Does anyone have experience of both machines?
I'd steer clear of Bissel. I had one replaced at 13 months with a split hose. Not only did the hose only last 13 months of light use there was no way of replacing just the hose, the whole machine got scrapped and needed a new one. Now the nozzle pipe has broken, out of warranty and no replacement possbile. Dumb.
The vax carpet cleaners are good ours cost £100 and is great had it a couple of years now
more money and liking the idea of a cordless spot washer here
Reviewed

I had the original little green Bissell portable cleaner. Size was perfect for using about in the car, but using it was a test of patience.
Two separate tanks like this unit, based around a similar design, just didn't look as Dyson-ey as this newer one does.

The way the bottles dock into the machine is of a poor design.

So you're ready to go, you've filled the cleaning solution tank with your warm water and cleaning solution and you dock it and the collection tank into the machine and it's off to the races.

As you use the Bissell, the tanks had a tendency to move slightly.
Not so much an issue with the cleaning solution, as that container has a feed valve, but even if it does, you can just vacuum that up.
The problem is with the collection tank. There are no latches to keep the bottles in place, relying on the moulded shape to keep the bottles correctly docked, to ensure the seal is doing an adequate job to feed all that dirty fluid into the collection tank.

As you use the machine, you're obviously pushing and pulling the wand across the surface you are cleaning, this results in some motion of the whole unit, which at some point a non-empty collection tank would start to lurch and lean about like a drunkard sailor as the collected water starts to move around, at some point the bottle gains enough momentum to move slightly away from the central upright position preventing a perfect seal where the collected liquid enters the bottle. The result is reduced suction, so your carpet is left wetter than it should be, plus dirty water & suds can start frothing out on to the surface you've just cleaned.

You could reduce the issue with bungee cord wrapped around tightly across the machine's 'chest', but it was just a faff using it.
Perhaps they have improved it, by use of better plastics that remain rigid with the heat expelled by the motor, but then there's a danger that the tanks won't withstand knocks as well.
Have a look at how postively the bottles dock into position, especially the seals before committing to this machine.

You might want to track down their BISSELL SpotClean Pet Pro Portable Carpet Cleaner which seems to have addressed the locking of tanks into position, also more powerful motor, but it appears to be in short supply. Reviewed here

A brief comparison of the machines I've mentioned.

You would get a more thorough and proper job done through a carpet and upholstery cleaner they use industrial machines to remove all traces of dirt
Thanks, ordered one

You can effectively rent one the next time IdealWorld have them on sale.
Buy it, clean your house and then call them up to say, "hhhm, I wasn't really impressed with it, can you come and collect it".
You get to use all the cleaning formula they bundle in with it, and it's dropped off/collected from your door and all you have to pay is one lot of P&P which will be under £10.
You can even make some money out of it, by renting it out to your neighbours seeing as you've got 60 days to return it.
2 months of free enterprise that the chancellor doesn't need to know about.

only idealworld would accept return, no other shops?

QVC?

If it didn't work, then yes, other shops would accept a return but not so sure how they would react to you effectively saying "here, I've also returned three empty bottles of cleaning fluid, I'd like my money back".
Whereas the shopping channels almost dare you to use everything up.

You'd have to argue with most shops why you couldn't tell it wasn't "fit for purpose" and why it took you 3 litres of cleaning concentrate to determine that.

The spray nozzle drips a little bit, but not too bad
Excellent discussion. Certainly worth a read if you (think) that you are in the market for one of these devices.

I'm after a carpet washer to hire too. Rug doctor and hss hire are not renting them out at the moment as it is not deemed essential . I did try and argue that it's to reduce the risk of spreading germs but they werent having it . Shame

I like the idea of buying one instead and then returning afterwards lol

And there I was almost settled upon the idea of getting the portable Rug Doctor after watching this (and even he suggests doing the ol' TV shopping order, use and return trick) and one of the Bissell

Why can't all these boffins make a machine that works well?! It's not a new concept, washing the ol' carpet.
Before Brazilians came to town, it was all the rage!

Bahaha! Thanks for the chuckle.

I may have just had a bad experience, but I did follow the instructions carefully as I had also read about these issues prior to purchase. I had actually ordered a Bissell spot clean but returned it in favour of the rug doctor when an eBay code came up .

I'd go for something with a decent warranty x

Youd assume. But in reality landlords like to rent houses for 10 years and expect them to be in better condition than they rented them out.. not unusual for it to be wrote in the tenancy agreement either for it to be profesinaly cleaned. My old landlord ( i now own) was delusional at times. He worked on his own house weekly to keep it nice. And after 6 years he expected his £2.50 per sqm cheap carpet to be mint. In reality the threads were showing..

My last landlord expected us to professionally clean the carpets, which we did not, they were very picky and sent photos of small dirt patches on carpet that was almost 10 years old however the amount we were charged was still under £100, so not worth spending this much to clean them.

This landlord also put white/creame carpets in pretty much every room, it feels like they do this on purpose to get the tenant to pay for the new carpets when they leave, as they show dirt so much worse then other colours.
