Black Caviar in store @ Aldi £9.99 for 20g

This is pretty incredible.. Aldi will be selling Kaluga Caviar for a tenner a jar (20g) which is equivalent to £499.50/KG which is not bad at all. This is not the usual lumpfish roe that most supermarkets sell as faux caviar, this is taken from farmed Kaluga Sturgeon - Ok, its no Beluga, but its not bad at all.

On sale in store from 19th Dec. Comes with a mother of pearl spoon for service.

I'll heat it just for the randomness of buying caviar from Aldi

I'm not convinced the people who eat caviar would be on this website somehow!

some good comments there.

£10 is still £10. Does anyone actually like the taste of this stuff or is it just eaten for show?! X)

Another attempt to get some media coverage and therefore free advertising. Aldi are trying to change people's perception of the store by stocking one offs of several high end products, realistically caviar is not going to appeal to the majority or even any of Aldi's customers. Some idiots on here will disagree but deep down we know it's the truth

I totally disagree but reckon it's not me that's the idiot ...

It's the run up to Christmas, all the "cheap" supermarkets sell luxury items then. And they sell some all through the year. What about the delicious packs of smoked salmon slices surrounded by herbs, with a foil sachet of dressing? They've been selling those for years and they often sell out. I sometimes buy myself one as a a treat, the one with the orange and mustard dressing. You clearly don't shop at Aldi often or you'd see the massive 4 x 4s parked in the car park while the owners are in buying up the bargain luxury products.

Remember a lot of well-off people are like that because they are very canny with their money and don't like being ripped off in expensive supermarkets.

I love it and have never eaten it in front of others (other than family), so clearly not "for show" lol.

Some people still think that Aldi customers are all low income and scrimpers. Not true at all.

I do like the taste of caviar but respect the various trade and endangered species bans affecting it right now. Remember that many people resident in the UK are from other parts of Europe and certain foods are more normal for them. Aldi offering a more European line range is often the provider. It would be very narrow minded to assume there is no authentic market for these types of food in the UK.

I will try it and my impressionable girls will enjoy thinking about the experience imagining being someone between Lady Penelope and a talentless Chavistocrat from Towie. If I like it I will buy more. If I dont like it I will consign the experience to that of tasteless oysters and wash it down with Aldis excellent Toro Loco.

I usually get red caviar from lidl, 50gr for £3.99, pretty good

My Mother and Father in-law work as house keeper and grounds keeper for people with big stately-home sized houses. The last family they worked for were always in Aldi picking up bargains. Old money is very shewd. It's new money that's concerned with status symbols and general bling. Broad stereotypes I know, but there is truth in there.

A retailer trying to get media coverage....shock horror!?

Not sure what sort of point you are trying to make but my wife makes massive savings when she shops at Aldi...hardly going to be possible from a few 'one off' high end products is it.

I think perhaps your perception of Aldi is all wrong....not everyone else's?

All I know is when my wife shops there my wallet is better off...that's the truth and I didn't have to dig down very deep to find it!

Just for … Just for info.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/11191901/Aldi-renames-10-Beluga-caviar-after-outcry.html

They don't mention that the price of any caviar goes up based on the size of the eggs, with "OOO" size being the optimum. Obviously for £10 anybody would know that this product is not OOO Beluga or Sevruga.

Kaluga and Beluga are about the same size, pretty ard to tell the two apart just by looking, accept perhaps for slight colour difference

There have always been "high end" products in Aldi. 10 years ago I was buying smoked salmon and olive oil from Aldi simply because it was better quality than from the major supermarkets. My perception of Aldi is that they put the stores in the cheaper part of town to keep overheads low, sell good veg and fruit, a better selection of wine than most supermarkets, and deserve to do well in the UK. Personally I can't believe why anyone would shop in Tesco.

Actual salmon roe

Doesn't say how big the hard disk is but seems a good price

Rich people like a bargain more than most IMHO.

Cold from me unless that is you also get the fish sperm. Boom.

not beluga, google it and you will see they had to back track as this stuff is from china and not from a true sturgeon. though 10 quid is ok for what you get.

You my friend are spot on. "Fur coat and no knickers", anytime i go to lidl or aldi there is always an AMG merc or some sort of porshe floating about. I dont think its any coincidence either.

There a lot of foreigners in the UK these days and for many of those from the east caviar is as common for them as pork scratching is for us.
