It's free so if you dont like it then nothing lost. Personally I think he is a good writer although not all of his work is great. I think this is one of his better novels.
If it's only a third of the novel for free, doesn't seem a great deal to me!

Eh? It's the whole book. The book is first in a trilogy, but surely you're not saying it's not a deal because you only get the first book free. Plus each book is a standalone story anyway.

I wasn't criticising the freebie, I was criticising the writer. Shocking and full of cliches.
It may be free, but how much is your time worth? Reading this book is hours of your life you'll never get back! The author likes to use 100 words when 3 would suffice, which makes plodding through the book a very tedious experience.

This is not a crime thriller (there is a murder at some point, but you soon forget about that), it's a very very dull, rambling ~500 page description of some bloke's childhood and the weather in a remote part of Scotland. If you like that, great, but if you're expecting anything exciting to happen, or the plot to move faster than an arthritic snail you're likely to be disappointed.

Well said. You forgot the rape/incest/violence every 2 pages just to make it more cliche/I'm a poo poo writer.
