A really good remake, played it before release too
A great update to an already great game.

Bought this on Steam a while back and absolutely loved it. The only problem was that the game just 'stopped' as Gordon leapt into the portal.

So the April update DOESN'T yet contain the final Xen episode? Did I get that right?
No Half Life 3 - cold

Correct - see the start of the update post:

We have patched the latest version of the Xen Engine and released it to everyone. Please let us know on the Steam forums if you run into any game breaking issues. As we have mentioned before, this is important to test our new features so that the Xen release can be as flawless as possible. We will probably do one more “Engine” release just before we drop Xen, in order to make sure that everything is running smoothly on everyone's machines. We want the Xen release to be as close to a simple content release as possible! Here is what is in the latest patch:
So what is Black Mesa? Juts a remastered version of the older games?

A remaster of the original Half Life only (the best one). Currently, it's completed up until the Xen chapters, though these are expected soon.
Lets be fair Xen was the lowlight of the game ... hope they improve it ...
Hot! HOT HOT HOT!!!

I'm seriously biased - Half Life is my favourite game of all time - Black Mesa is a worthy remake, and one of my top 3 game playthroughs for last year.

So it's still a work in progress then. Thanks for replying

You're welcome. It's very nearly complete, and what is completed is polished and feels conclusive and coherent. Worth playing. Xen was probably the worst part of the original Half Life anyway, to be frank, but technically, Black Mesa is only ~90% complete as a result.

This (comment) was a triumph,
I’m making a note here: “huge success!”.
Been so long since I played the originals - will this spoil the memories I wonder...?
Absolutely fantastic game, well worth it. And the soundtrack puts the icing on the cake.

The team have categorically said HL3 is not going to be made. At least not by Valve
One of the first FPS games that actually drew you in. I'll never forget that opening train ride. Not sure if I want to revisit it and ruin the rose tinted memories.
Heat, been waiting for this to go down in price.

5.99 seems more worth it as the whole development phase hasn't really gone to plan.

Yes, buy it. You won't be disappointed.

I felt exactly the same. But they've done an astonishing job of the remake - it's clearly made be people that loved the original for the same reasons I did. It lived up to my nostalgia inflated expectations.

Looking forward to playing it all the way through again when Xen is complete.

Same, downloading it now...no memory of ever buying it!
Didn't even know this existed , can't remember much of the first game except the very beginning so will enjoy experiencing it all again, about time I used that steam credit

Quake drew me in; the first proper 3d FPS. I do love half life though. Which iirc was based on the quake engine?

It's a fan made remake of the first game that has been authorised by Valve. It's been in development for a long time and is thus highly anticipated. It was considered vapourware at one point but it looks like it will actually get finished, it's just that progress has been slow. It was released as Early Access a few years ago so that people could play the levels that were ready and the remaining levels are being added one at a time with updates.

Not a remaster, a remake. It's a complete recreation of the first game in the Source engine. Valve did release Half-Life: Source along with Half-Life 2 in 2004 but fans were disatisfied with it as it still used original models and textures, so some decided to make their own version and later combined their efforts to form the Crowbar Collective, developers of Black Mesa.

Half-Life 3 has never been less likely to happen. It doesn't sound like there is anyone at Valve still working on it - most of the creative team have left over the last couple of years and Valve seem to have shifted their focus to multiplayer games that are continually updated and monetised in various ways, such as TF2, CS:GO, Dota2 and the upcoming Artifact.
Just broken my self-imposed maximum £5 per game limit for this. I had to set myself a limit a couple of years ago because I had, and still have, so many well-rated games that have been sitting in my steam library just waiting to be installed years after I bought some of them, mainly due to me preferring multiplayer games these days. This is not going to be one of those games though as I absolutely loved the Half Life series back in the day and I know I will play this to the very end, Xen or no Xen.

Half Life was essentially built on the Quake engine, heavily modified (GoldSRC) which became the Source Engine. A proper golden age of 3d graphics engines. Very fond memories.

Damn. It's such a shame. HL1&2 were such good games for they're time. Argh. Thanks for the info tho. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the HL games and their expansions or rather episodes.

I still enjoy tf2 now and then. I used to play cs a lot but everyone takes that game so serious now. So I stopped playing cs a long time ago.

I've just finished a replay of Half-Life + expansions + HL2 + Episode 1 & 2 and, given how Episode 2 ends, on a bit of a cliffhanger but with a clear idea of what was going to happen next (Eli telling you to go destroy the Aperture Science ship Borealis), it's baffling how it was never actually made.

I know. I would have thought that HL3 would have been a smash hit if it was made. It sucks when you think of the amount of garbage being made these days. Bah.
