What's the set with a good transfer?

The picture really is crap on the non-remastered black boxset. This one is the remastered version ...

How good could a Blu Ray release ever look? I thought that any transfers would be crap PQ owing to being made on tape, the masters being destroyed.

Here's a brief comparison:

There's very little (if any improvement). More detailed comparisons/discussion here:

Judge for yourself, remastered doesn't always mean better quality (eg loudness wars for audio).

Looking at the screen shots there seems quite an improvement; but I guess both would look pretty poor on an LCD TV. Reading the AV forums discussion neither version is particularly good.

The thing about the black non-remastered boxset is that a screenshot comparison will only give you part of the problem, and you need to see the video in motion to fully appreciate the lousy picture quality as some things stand out a lot more watching the video.

Take for example, the first piccy on that comparison site where the old picture shows fuzzy 'comb' lines around Blackadder's face - I believe this is what they call interlacing - and it is extremely distracting because every time something moves you get this comb effect. A still picture can;t convey this.

Another example of lousy picture quality that can only be fully appreciated by seeing the video is the amount of compression noise ... look at the 2nd picture on the comparison site and note how grainy the old non-remastered picture is ... this grain is not static, but continually dancing around on the screen as you watch the episode - a still picture can't show this.

So, take those comparisons with a pinch of salt and undertstand that those pictures cannot convey all the problems that exist with the old set.
