n00b question but this run on the Android OS?

No, it runs on Blackberry's own OS, and will soon be upgraded to BB10 as used in their new phones.

It does however, have sideloading support for Android applications (have to install via your PC) although depending on the application this can be limited.

Do you think its worth buying a refurb. I've never taken that risk but I am thinking about this one

Excellent tablet for the price, 64gb of storage too for less than £80, decent screen, great speakers, I use it for watching video mainly.

Great deal. I my Playbook!

It's snappy, the screen is great, the sound is extraordinarily good for a tablet, has brilliant WiFi reception and a great browser. For under 80 quid it's a no brainer.

For the price (especially as a media consumption device) , I dont think there is a tablet that comes close.

Good deal but didn't Blackberry's CEO predict the death of tablets in 5 years?

I'm still voting hot as it is a good deal.

Unless Phablets take off then they most certainly do still have a place I think..they are still the best format at least for digital magazines and portable video media and casual internet browsing.

hows the apps side for Blackberry? as good as apple and android? im assuming it has the basics like iplayer, tuneinradio and other apps which are now mainstream on apple and android OS?

great price, just wondering on its longevity.

As phones are getting bigger it's not that crazy of an idea but I'd say it's more to do with Blackberry not having a new tablet in the works right now lol

Only a 3 months warranty, suppose 12 months at this price would be too good to be true!

Waiting to see if they really will upgrade these to BB10.

If you watch the video of the interview, the comments are taken out of context. He was talking specifically about in the work place, with ever better phones. Its a view I tend to agree with, just look at netbooks.

I dont think they will die, but just with netbooks the market will re-adjust as technology changes and there is no longer the perceived need for the technology. (I say this writing on a netbook, and owning a playbook)

Not great in comparison to Android and iOS.

**** all apps compared to 'normal' Android, but you can side load apps.

It is BB version of Android

The link shows grade b...

Dont need one, but under £80 to leave the Ipad at home and take this on holiday...has to be done

the link goes to a Grade B refurb? Or am i missing something?

Apps are a major weak point - the blackberry has many of the main apps (they tend to be more expensive than their Android and apple equivalents) but there are still gaps and if apps are your thing then another tablet might be the answer.

There is a list of apps available to browse

Says Grade B now, maybe the A ones are OOS. Same price so offer not quite as good.

Was most certainly Grade A when I posted the deal.

I've got an iPad2, an android tablet and a BB Playbook.
iPad blows the BB out of the water in terms of apps, android close second but takes more user interaction to get things running. But I prefer the playbook by far for watching videos on.
I can drop BD rips and MKVs straight onto the device and play, it has HDMI out so can plug and play on any TV, it's got 64gb of storage and is a bit smaller than the iPad so easier to carry around.

I recommend getting Kalemsoft media player (currently £5 in the store) and then it pretty much plays everything you throw at it and even gives you DNLA access to your shares on your network (picks up my NAS/Windows shares no issue).

The BB app store is kind of barren though, luckily as mentioned, a lot of android apps can be sideloaded.

Approximately 2/3rds of android apps can be side loaded. There are a few native playbook games which are good (8mm, Sim city etc) but I tend to use emulators (Playstation/Snes/Dos etc) which work great.

Grade A must ave sold out a bit less than the price they sell for one ebay so definitely deserving of some heat.

you can have mine for that price, it is a glorified media player. can't do things that you can with android, ie watch mkv, (and don't post that you can if they are not ac3 as 99% are ac3.), download torrents (play torrent doesn't work), use as a remote, banking, Skype video call.... the list goes on and on.

and bb10 on playbook was promised but that looks like bs now too.

yes an android is more, but you will not regret paying out more than this p.o.s.

Good constructive criticism, just like to add if anyone wants a choice between apps and a fluid OS as far as I am concerned Blackberrys OS is far and away the best OS experience on a tablet.

there's no description for grade b, what do you reckon, damaged? scuffed? missing power supply?

dont know whether to get one now

Not true, Kalemsoft happily plays ac3 MKVs in stereo.

for £5... android has a dozen aps that do it for free..

Voted hot but I am waiting for another round of price chips on the new stock.

Not an essential purchase so happy to wait and see.

Guys make sure you buy the Playbook Magnetic charger (bit like a Magsafe macbook charger). The Playbook has a known design issue with the USB/power port. It's fragile as hell. Thousands and thousands are being repaired by Blackberry.

So just buy this:

Depends what you want....I hate android as a tablet experience, it is alright for a phone, but terrible an OS on a tablet. Kalemsoft and PDF Reader are the only two apps I have bought and need for the Playbook.

It is $5 if you spoof the DNS to the US App Store for anyone that is interested.

You can play ac3 if you use Kalemsoft.
Agree with your about everything else, seriously lacking app store + expensive Vs. Apple/Android. This is great as a portable media player and maybe some internet.
Skype video would have made this tablet so much more appealing.

but the BB doesn't and so for £5 you can. Add on all the Apps you want and it'll still come in at under £100.00. Its a brilliant piece of kit, i love it, i have all the apps i ever need sideloaded, i have 15 movies for the kids, all HD, i have 100 odd albums stored, i use it for reading using Kindle (although i did buy a Nook for this yesterday!). It isnt an Apple but hey, guess what, it realy doesnt matter as this machine can do virtually the same as the Ipad. Hot deal and heat added

Skype will be coming with the BB10 upgrade.

Are there any Internet radio apps you can get, like the equivalent of TuneIn Radio? Would be a great present for my mum if it does!

Yes, and free - Nobex Radio from BlackBerry world.

Your limited with native torrent programs, but there is at least half a dozen andriod conversions which work perfectly fine. If you want MKV files to play (with ac3) its 4 pound to buy KalemSoft media player.

Have you tried converting the remote control apps for your playbook. Most work for me (I use mine as a large XBMC remote).

Skype is an issue for many people, that is a fault. Should be addressed with BB10
