The 360 HD DVD drive - though it's external USB2 and it doesn't write DVDs. Haven't seen any internal drives.

Ah, thanks for this. Didn't know you could get internal ones.

£84 for bluray and £67 for HD DVD, would make a nice HTPC system

This wouldn't upgrade the computer to high definition, you don't need a disc format to do that.

^^^

yes you do... along with a new graphics card, motherboard etc. basically a new PC

no... you don't

a pc is already high definition if it supports high resolutions..which they do.
I can watch a 1080p video on my pc without even a dvd drive in my pc..

yeah right, a bluray burner for under a hundred quid! i think not.

still a good price - considering the xbox hd-dvd is about the same price (external so can be used with a pc).

i won't touch bluray though, the endorsers are scum and the copy protection is a fiasco.

make sure your pc and graphics card is up to spec though, if you don't have a machine that easily runs vista, its going to struggle to play hd.

oh and look into buying slysoft anydvd-hd unless you have a hdcp compliant monitor (or just want to rip to your hard disk).

its really too much hassle to play hd via a pc at the moment.

it is a blu ray burner actually, its an amazing price at that, i am considering getting a blu-ray version and a hd-dvd version. (the hd-dvd version listed at £60 odd does not write by the looks of it.)

neither does this, you ain't gonna get a hd or bluray burner for aywhere near this price, YET

When he refers to it as a 'burner', I think it's because it can burn CD/DVD.
But, for Blu-Ray, it's definitely read-only.

It's worth pointing out that it uses SATA to connect to the PC - double-check your PC's specs before buying. But, if you have to go check, then chances are it's because your PC is quite old, and you'll be wanting a new gfx card/ram/etc as well!!

this does not burn bluray discs, only reads them at 5x speed.

however it can burn CD's and DVD's

Just answering a previous post. I guess that HD's a large as well nowadays.

damn it! why is the black one more expensive?

just a word of advice, if you havent got aleast 2gb memory and a decent processor and a 8000 series nvidia card forget it, your movie will stutter and not play.

Because 1080p sources can create some nice 720p x264 5 gig movie files.
Its easy enough to do, I use my ps3 to rip the movie's.

Dont forget that a monitor that does 1920×1080 native would also be beneficial!
or even a monitor able to display 1280x720.

You only need a HD 2600 and a single core CPU to watch either optical HD format.

A 17” TFT can handle the 1280x720 but it will off course be letter boxed.

You’ll also need software that can play these formats which costs about $70 – 100.

Booo blu ray sucks - long live hd dvd

Thats not strictly true. There are a few motherboards with IGP that will cope with HD (1080p) which a decent CPU (2.2GHz+) alone. Memory wise, 2GB on Vista and 1GB on XP. This is particularly in reference to the R690 Chipset. Im sure the same applies to new G35 Chipset (e.g. Asus P5E-VM HDMI)

Not really - 30GB for a movie takes a fair chunk of a 500GB hard disk, but if you think about the fact that a 500GB drive can be picked up for £50, that's only £3 for a full-quality pirate copy that can be watched without the trouble of swapping discs in and out. Which isn't bad, unless you mean legally.

There are Retail bundles available with software that may prove better value than this depending on what software you want to use. SVP have some as do other retailers.

No, actually it isn't. But then that won't stop you barging in again and being a nob, once an idiot always an idiot, eh Jamie?

I paid £80 for a DVD-ROM just to play DVDs on a PC back in 2000 so £62 for the Toshiba HD-DVD doesn’t seem so bad in that context considering it’s still a new format. Adding in the cost of the playback software makes it seem more expensive but I guess the software companies are currently milking it from the early adopters with pricing.

I used to have an Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive but using it with a 20” monitor (1680x1050) it was somewhat underwhelming. If I ever buy a 24” TFT (1920x1200) I’ll look at buying another HD drive if they haven’t both died the death by then.

It’s an easy enough mistake to make. Being misinformed doesn’t make someone an idiot and replying in such an uncouth way doesn’t show you in a good light.

So if i were to buy the tosh hd drive could this be put together as one of these cube type base units to form an hd player as such....if so what are all the components i would need.

Lots and it would cost twice as much as a dedicated player.

The hardware would be cheap enough provided you use a HD 2400 Pro (But when you add in the cost of the operating system and playback software the cost rises to over £200.

If you are building a HTPC anyway then the extra costs to budget for are these:

HD 2400 Pro - £27+
HD-DVD drive - £62+
Playback software - £40-50
