Would say goodfellas which was filmed years ago actually look any better than an old upscaled dvd?

Voted hot for 300 alone

...shouldn't the title say The Hut and not DVD.co.uk?

Original Poster

true - post amended

Not bad prices, specially 300. Excellent film in HD I'll bet.

Someone told me on here that Blue-Rays cost £25 a film.

300 is awesome in HD, although Meet the spartans which is a pi55 take of 300 is sooooo funny.

good prices there:thumbsup:

Perhaps I should be the one to tell you it's spelled 'Blu-ray'.

I've got it on blu-ray, and unfortunately it's quite grainy. Probably better quality than on upscaled DVD, but not much...

Was obviously filmed before hd was about, i really cant see the point in them releasing these unless they are filling the discs with previously unseen extras and the like.

It would have been shot on film which has a resolution far greater than HD (you can scan film to an insanely high resolution if you so wish), the quality of a blu-ray transfer is up to how much time and money a studio wants to spend on remastering it and cleaning up the film. The grain, however, will always be there if shot on film and different types of film have different amounts of grain. Even for newer films shot on HD digital cameras, directors will often have grain added to footage for artistic effect (and to give it a "film" look).

Cheers for the info, never realised that.

This link might be handy for Blu-ray buyers :

Lots of Blu-rays are region free, and much cheeper from amazon.com. I recently got the first 4 Harry potters for about £20 delivered in one of their buy-1-get-1-free deals.

Good price for a uk supplier tho.

The Prestige is a bloody good film, highly recommended.

Main example of deliberate addition of grain is 300. Seen it on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. The grain makes it look all the more impressive in my opinion, same as Sin City would on same format.

Full Metal Jacket however, is a prime example of not much effort being put into a translation. Still looks very similar to the original DVD in terms of quality.

Oh yeah. Great Prices!! Voted Hot.

If you go to HMV, you can find disks at £25.

LOL!

Goodfellas was filmed using film, which has an effective resolution of 4 times that of 1080p.

And a lot of preoprders at play and most places are £23.99, very nearly £25!

I ordered Xmen on bluray from these guys when the price was 7.99.

This was back in December just after Christmas. I get weekly emails telling me the stock of the item will be in soon. Still waiting to this day.

Very poor service...

I'd agree with that.

Seconded!

I have heard reports from a number of people now that it is not really worth paying the extra for Blu-ray discs as the quality is not noticeably different from a standard DVD.
From what has been said here so far, it seems to be true!

Having said that, others also say it is incredible.

Not having a player for it personally, I cannot really comment on it myself.

What do people here think?

At last some decent prices on Blu-Ray. Only trouble is the cheaper prices seem to be for stuff which has already been released on HD-DVD which is now selling for half the Blu-Ray prices. Would be good to see some Blu-Ray exclusive releases sell for less.

Just bought The Prestige. Thanks OP - heat & rep added!

When you follow the link all the way to Amazon.com it still says there only for US and Canada! i thought Blu-ray DVD were not region free but HD DVD are. Do you have to put in some code to get round the region encoding?

Thank you very much for this link, I just ordered loads of movies. Some costing as little as £7 each.

Full Metal Jacket is being re-released on Blu-ray as a new special edition in the coming weeks - just to let you know as the first edition Blu-ray is in this deal.

Edit, In fact I just noticed they are both in the deal, so make sure you get the latest one!

Does anyone know if "Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics" is worth buying?

The plot is pretty rubbish, but the production design is okay. Didn't recognise any of the people in it.

Also good for anyone looking to build up their Blu-Ray collection:

3 for 2 at Amazon.co.uk
[URL="amazon.co.uk/gp/…tml?[/URL]

Most seem to be £17.98 = £11.99 per disc
