Steven Spielberg directs this sci-fi action adventure based on the novel by Ernest Cline and starring Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke. In the year 2045, most of the desolate world's population spends its days in the virtual reality landscape of the OASIS, including teenager Wade Watts (Sheridan) and his avatar Parzival. The late creator of the OASIS, scientist James Halliday (Mark Rylance), has hidden an Easter egg somewhere in the vast construct and the first to find it will become the rightful heir to his $500-billion fortune and take full control of the OASIS.

With the help of his friends, who call themselves the High Five, Wade races to find the hidden treasure before anyone else, including the CEO of Innovative Online Industries, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) and his army of Sixers. The cast also includes Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller and Lena Waithe.

That was the idea

The book is always better.
Good film and the Atmos sound track on the blu ray is decent too
Can I just say the book and the movie are rubbish! Ernest Cline is an awful writer.
Watching this on a VR headset in 3D is mind blowing.

Haha matters of opinion, everyone has them. For me movie gives you the same characters, a couple of scenes taken from the book and the same premise but a different story with more mainstream references to games, movies and pop culture. Both are enjoyable in their own right, to me it's the plus of having 2 forms of media telling a different story to the same outcome, although I'm only near the end of the book so no spoilers

If anyone is in any doubt there's a really fun podcast 372 Pages We'll Never Get Back by a couple of guys from MST3K/RiffTrax that goes into the book in detail and explains just how and why it's so terrible. It points out things like how many phrases are copy/pasted throughout the book and how things like "They were dressed in 80s clothes, dancing to 80s music" is terrible writing because it doesn't really describe anything.
If you didn't like the book, it will make you feel validated because it will help you articulate what you didn't like about it. If you liked the book, you might still enjoy it beacuse it's all in good humour.
I quite enjoyed the film and the soundtrack is great too.
with everyone staying home and VR getting cheaper, maybe the OASIS is getting close
Has anyone received their order yet? I ordered on the day it was posted, got a 'dispatched' message the next day and then nothing...
