I have it, before anything upgrade the wheels. Then the crank as the chain rubs once you put it in any serious wattage

Yes the wheel uograde always make a big improvement if they are basic level factory which these are. What do you mean the chain rubs, I usually use a shimano chainset if picking by choice but I wouldn't expect the chain to have issue just because of extra power, for me rubbing chain usually refers to the chainline with the chain catching on the mech when selecting the bigger gears.

    This or the CRX?
Looks like main difference is 1x11 or 2x10.
Anyone care to share any real world experience with 1x Vs 2x and SRAM Vs Shimano?
Leaning towards 1x but not sure about maxing out of using it on road?

I ride a 1x gravel bike and haven't had a problem with it maxing out on the road. There will always be riders who claim they spin out on a 1x, but I haven't ever felt under-geared on mine. Have a look at a gear calculator to help making up your mind

    sheldonbrown.com/gea…rue

At a perfectly reasonable cadence of 90rpm, this gives a speed range of 7.5-28.5mph, or 46kmh. My spinning threshold is about 120rpm, which gives a max of 38mph or over 60kmh. For me, on a gravel bike, that's more than enough.

The 1x also has a couple of advantages. It loses an extra bit of weight and complexity through not needing a front mech. It also allows a narrow/wide chainring and a derailleur clutch to keep chain slap and chain unshipping down. I've never had a chain come off on either my XC or gravel bike (both 1x) even when bouncing around offroad.

Just adding a little objectivity to an area in which macho claims are a bit prevalent.

I have a boardman road bike which i use for commuting 5 days a week. I have a service plan at Halfords and a mechanic there told me that halford's bikes are ok, but there are not the best for commuting, according to him Ribble, orbea, specialized are better (though probably more expensive).

Halfords bike staff can be of variable quality...

Boardman bikes are just about the most common commuter bikes out there, because they are good VFM & sold very widely.

Bearing in mind all three brands sell bikes from just under this price to between 5 and 10 times more than this, it isn't the most helpful comment. Will a Spesh Diverge E5 be a better bike than this? Some might say the frame is, but that is debatable, and the components are considerably worse. Will an S Works Diverge be better than this? Yes it will be at £10k I wouldn't leave it chained up at work.

This has got a few details that make it very good for the price, such as the GRX400 groupset and hydraullic brakes. Buy a couple of tubeless valves and sealant to get the best out of the wheels and tyres and it will ride superbly (will cost you £15 max), but if that's too scary it will work just fine as is.

Good discount for a good-value gravel bike. On a completely personal note, the Boardman ADV has a quite aggressive geometry for a gravel bike, great if you like that but not my cup of tea (I'd prefer the geometry of the Giant Revolt, for example).

I agree I think it leans more towards CX than gravel

This looks pretty good. And it comes with pedals!

Looks like it has proper mudguard mounts. Get some on that and it's a great commuter / winter bike.

The irony that whilst this is a good deal at £1080, this bike won Bike of the year for under £1,000 in 2021 according to the Halfords website.

True story. Inflation has been ridiculous.

i've got 1x11 on one of my gravel bikes. 42 ring up front, 11/42 at the back. I spin out down hills in Norfolk, but is great for 95% of the time. I wouldnt use this set up for a serious road ride. Fine for commuting, off road or mainly flat roads.

Just out of curiosity, can the British Cycling single-use 8% discount be used with bikes that are on sale at Halfords? I'm not actually a member, but on the site it says "It cannot be used in conjunction with Cycle2Work, Halfords Gift cards or any other voucher, promotion, colleague discount or exchanged for cash."

If so, does it give you the full 8% discount, or is it limited to a value? I'm also curious whether the discount would be against the full £1200 value (i.e. making the total bike cost £984), or if it's against the current price £1080 (making the total value £993.60). If anyone knows how this works then a little insight would be much appreciated... (edited)

Defence discount and blue light card give similar 8% discounts. You can use it on a sale item like this, but obviously it's 8% off the sale price!

If you want further discount, you might be able to purchase through a topcashback link which gives 3%...although this might be rejected by use of the discount code. Best not plan on it, but treat it as a bonus if it goes through.

Then further layer the discount by using a debit card linked to Airtime Rewards. You'll get 4% cashback to use against your mobile bill.
