Honestly you won't notice any difference in the gear change. Where you will notice the difference is when you need to climb a hill of 20%, where a 12/28 10 speed cassette will make things harder than an 11 speed. Still it's a minor negative and for the average cyclist you probably won't venture up hills of this gradient anyway.

You'll notice the difference when it comes to replacing the ultegra parts.

Still a lot for a Boardman with Tiagra and Boardman wheels. 2nd hand Ultegra groupset and better brand would be my preference.
Until it’s stolen and you have to buy again. Best off with a £100 bike
good deal average cyclist wont notice diff between ultegra 107 or tiagra

Is there anything in that road bike section that you would recommend to an average user? I am not hung up on the carbon frame where versus a bike with heavier frame but has better gears, tyres, breaks, etc. Budget is a grand but even better if i get away with a £600 spend. Handling and acceleration are a preference.

If its the new 4700 tiagra I would tend to agree but the old 4600 is a fair step down.

I think the best bike for the money is the Boardman. I've ridden the best part of 3,000miles on one and it never let me down. If disc is your thing, I've heard the triban by btwin is a good bike. It's an aluminium frame but has 105 and at the price point it's a good deal.

Carbon boardman here and love it. 105 5700 gears and barely notice the difference to ultegra. Mine has done over 21,000 miles now so highly recommended.

I have an Ultegra groupset bike and another winter hack with Tiagra/105 mix. It is like night and day between the two. And I don't mean the gearing, it is the slickness and effortless of gear changes.

And for the comment about a £100 bike to avoid being nicked, if you are a serious cyclist riding a £1K bike you should be riding it outside not parking it. If I am using my bike to travel somewhere and then have to park it outside then I use my £30 year old town bike which has more emotional than financial value.
