I've voted hot - as it is free, but can't really see the benefit of this over just using a contactless card ?
I've had one of these since Barclays started trialling them. The advantage over a contactless card is that you load the device with some money (you decide how much), then if you lose the device the maximum that you could lose is the remaining balance (and I say "could lose" because you have the same protection as you have with your normal bank card).
You can add money to the device quickly & easily using the mobile app by linking the device to a bank account.

Yes, you can use your phone instead. Yes, you can use your contactless card instead. Yes, you can pay by cash instead. It's not meant to replace all other means of payment, it's meant to be a convenient way of paying for lower value items. It's like marmite - either you think it's worth having, or you don't.
It's a useful option if you're doing sports like running or cycling and you want to minimize what you're carrying especially if you have an older phone without NFC.
Or if you have a phone which has been rooted.
Are these waterproof?

Are these waterproof?

At the heart of it all is something very similar to a mini sim card so yes, the card is waterproof. But I'm not sure about the fobs/bands/etc that hold the card, as I have placed my card in something else.
It's only free if Barclays invited you to try it through an email, otherwise it's £19.99. Wouldn't call call this free.
