While it's great that you're saving £30 over the RRP and I've always had good after sales service from smartfonestore, I personally would spend an extra £30 and buy from Apple Store - their after sales service is still second to none and at least the phone will be factory unlocked. For all we know , smartfonestore stock may well be unlocked but could lock to the first sim, just like Carphone warehouse stock

yes and may not find out until much later that it has been locked. the £30 is worth it to have no issues with returns or claims of lost/stolen items.

Carphone Warehouse stock isn't locked - this myth needs to die. It was the case in the past but not any more since June 2017 I think.

But you are entirely right, it's better to buy from Apple, if only for their very open acknowledgement of the EU 6-year coverage which you will only get if you buy from them. You could argue that in 6 years your phone is obsolete but I like that peace of mind.

Smartfonestore are very good, the company I work for used to buy in bulk from them, we don't anymore as we buy and refurbish everything in house now. Great company though, warranties on refurbished stuff is painfully low at 60 days, but even Grade C stuff is usually in very good condition. I just bought a Sony Xperia XZ for £179 from them a couple months ago, bargain price for a higher end circa 2016 phone.

The problem for me is Android I need more power, the 3GB RAM in the XZ just isn't enough. I like Sony so I'm waiting for decent price on XZ1 or XZ Premium.

you are correct CPW stock is not locked for non-Apple phones, but their iPhones are sold as 'unlocked, but will lock to the first sim put in the phone' ...

You're right although Smartfonestore WILL take the phone back and reimburse you. £30 isn't enough of a saving though.

Or save yourself nearly £700 by not upgrading the perfectly good iPhone you have.

Please get your facts straight, this was the case in the past and is no longer the case now. I have an iPhone 8 from them and confirmed both before purchase and have tested this myself with different SIMs. I only got the 8 from them as my BB KEYOne screen fell off (long story):

£5 quidco too

Yeah i like smartfonestore too but this saving isnt enough.

iPhone 8 has smaller battery than iPhone 7
Maybe upgrade is wrong word

Same with the 6 and 6s. My 8 genuinely does last longer than my 7 did. I would agree it’s not worth the ‘upgrade’ though

fair enough my friend. I stand corrected.

Thank you for having the decency to admit it. I got accused of lying by someone else here when I said that about CPW but iPhones from them in the last few months should no longer 'lock to first SIM', this is good as it opens up CPW deals to many more buyers here.

£30 is a small saving however it is hard to get anything off Apple products, especially so soon after release

You'd be a fool to go for it though. Does smartfonestore adhere to the consumer rights act when you need to return your phone after the 1 year Apple warranty? I doubt it very much. Apple do adhere to consumer rights so that thirty pounds is money well spent.
