I have been doing my research in to these over the last couple of days as our old in-ear thermometer gave up the ghost late last night. The thermoscan 7 is a better thermometer and is available in Argos and Amazon for around £33 link. IMO worth the small additional outlay.
I only have two ears, a five ear thermometer seems excessive...

Really good to have in house with kids
Brilliant product for kids. Get it if you don't have one. From experience when like one was sick on holiday, Paramedics use this style of thermometer. The caps can be bought in bulk from eBay so you don't worry about running out

Is this preferable over the forehead thermometer? That always seemed the easiest option

I often read about these being inconsistent.
Can anyone say if theirs is consistent?

Forehead is much easier but less accurate.

I've got a version 6, whenever I have used it it's been consistent between measurements if I have needed to repeat it.

Usually sense check it by measuring my own temperature afterwards and I've not had an erroneous result yet.

I find in-ear temperature to be more consistent. But readings will usually be different between left and right.

You would usually have slightly different temperature in left and right ear, this is OK

I'm a GP and have found even very expensive Forehead monitors less accurate than tympanic ones. This is similar to what I use
Dam paid £31.99 for this on Amazon back in Nov. Heat added.
