Breville VKJ142 Hot Cup £29.99 @ Amazon

Found 7th Oct
I had one of these for a year and really good if only a few people in the house. Get a cup of hot boiling water in about 15-20 secs. These usually around £40 so £29.99 seems like a great deal.

surprisingly excellent reviews though I like my tea made hot and these type kettels for me have never made it hot enough. Heat given for price though.

Good price. I have the variable dispense version been using for about 5+ years. Never had any issues with it.

Maybe you just didn't understand it?

Also at Argos for this price for those that got the £20 free voucher for spending £10 the other day and want to buy something that isn't a rip off like most Argos stuff

Pretty sure I paid £25 a couple of years ago.

Much better than a standard kettle and no issues with temperature of the water.

First one leaked at the base of the handle, there's a join in the plastic, so got it replaced. Second one is showing signs of the same issue starting.

Yup. It's been cheaper on numerous occasions...

I have this and it provides boiling water - I have tried another from tefal and it was not boiling.

I have this one too and can confirm it does provide really hot water. I can only drink really hot tea, usually straight from a boiled kettle (with milk) and this is hot enough for me. Gives roughly 300mls water per serving if this helps anyone decide but it doesn't hinder in any way as I decant into a separate mug if I ever need more or less. It does a decent sized mug of tea/coffee though

I'm sure this just measures a set amount, for an extra £4.50 this one has a stop button.

Second you on that

Had one(well two) for years top kettle but it's never boiled in 20 seconds more like 40

These are great, especially for loners like me. Once you work out wich mugs you can use.
Put cup under and turn on, spoon of coffee in then by the time ive got back from fridge with milk its done!

Had mine a few years and theres alot of scale showing on the crevices outside so may purchase a new one soon.

Err... if you are bringing water to the Breville VKT124 Hot Cup Water Dispenser to pour into the hinged lid, then surely you can do the same into the lid of the soon-to-be heavy kettle too!

I know what you mean, but even with a std 'boiling' kettle I often find my beverage is not hot enough after adding the milk, etc, so I just stick it in the microwave for 20-30 secs.

I also microwave tea but please don't microwave coffee. I've heard it's very carcinogenic to microwave coffee

Nope, I pay the maid to do that the night before ;-)

I don't think that one is variable, at least I can't see it anywhere.
THIS one definitely is though.

But you don't pour this one when it's boiled, that's the key for the elderly or infirm. This was a boon for my late grandmother in her residential home as she could have it in her room and the carer would fill it in the morning and she was able to have tea or coffee when she liked (she also used tea granules and took it black so no pouring whatsoever) - tiny bit of independence back again!

Yes, but it seemed to me you were implying with "soon to be heavy kettle" comment, that there was no advantage of this product over a kettle-type so I was trying to point out there is. If I'm mistaken, as it seems joedastudd is too, then I apologise, but your point, whatever it is, could be clearer.

I suppose the risk gets even worse if you drink it as well?

A faff above boiling a kettle yet these are proven to save a silly amount of energy?! These are also quicker to use so how is pressing one button, getting a faster drink and for less expense a faff exactly?

Exactly!

As I mentioned in one of the many previous threads, water should be drawn when required for a better cup of tea.

(As mentioned in that thread) I use a different product that is neither the VKJ142 nor a kettle, so I can appreciate the disadvantages of both.

Yes and you should only use filtered water.
Use loose leaf in a teapot where the pot and the cup have been preheated.

The reason instructions state freshly drawn water is to stop people using water which has already been boiled.
As devices like this only boil water as required it's not an issue without have really bad limescale.

I use spring (bottled) water, so likescale isn't an issue, but thanks for the advice.

My comment said that I personally found it a faff, not that other people necessarily would. You can't take away my personal opinion. Just having something else to clean and de-scale annoyed me
