Honestly I thought these types of cameras might have had a slightly larger sensor.

The camera has to have a small sensor to allow the 40 x zoom capability in such a small lens length. As long as you are not going to shoot in very dark conditions and do not want to produce printouts above 12 to 18" then this 1/2.3" sensor is adequate.

I was thinking on recommending a bridge camera to someone, I've never really looked into a bridge camera before.
So I ignorantly assumed that a dedicated camera such as this might have had a sensor significantly larger then the 1/2.5" sensor in my phone

Frankly, I have a Nikon L310 bridge camera and the versatility of the zoom range is superb and when printed out 7x5" the quality is perfect. Yes I do own 2 other Nikon D-slrs but I would rather carry a £100 bridge camera around than the d-slr where each lens costs more than that. If I am unsure of what I am going to photograph then taking a bridge camera gives me the best compromise.
Got 55% in Which? testing. Cons poor video, shutter delay, limited controls and features.
