British Airways launches affordable long-haul flights (London to US for £175)

Good news for travel lovers - or those yet to book their summer holiday - British Airways has launched competitively-priced 'basic' air fares on a selection of their long-haul routes.

The new fares will be available from London to the following destinations: Austin, Texas (from £246); Boston (from £175); Delhi (from £210); Denver, Colorado (from £191); Dubai (from £143); Hong Kong (from £228); Oakland, California (from £185); Philadelphia (from £234); Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (from £240); Singapore (from £230).

So what's the catch? You have to pay to check in hold luggage - and it will cost you approximately £80 for a return journey. However, you do get two pieces of hand-luggage, so clever packers who can travel with the bare minimum might be able to avoid the fee.

Maybe they should launch affordable European flights...
British Airways regular long haul flights are bad enough. The thought of a budget version has me picturing plasters holding the wings in place.
British airways is a appalling airlines nowadays. Once the best in the world. Now a borderline third world airline. Pay more and fly in newer better planes.

Where is the link to book ?

There isn’t one - this is apparently a deal but isn’t a deal at the moment, but it could be a deal when it begins. In other news, DFS will be having a sale soon, so be on the lookout

I flew to las Vegas with Thomas cook. Brand new aircraft and top notch service. You are absolutely right the service BA offer is pathetic. Snobby staff who are living in the past thinking they are still the best. Emirates is defined one of the best airlines and very competitive.

Any idea if Oak Furniture Land will be having a sale soon?
Bloody crap.
So what's the catch?
That you cant actually book a flight at those prices cos as usual with a dinosaur airline like BA the prices are only as described if you book a return.

If that bunch of clowns buy norwegian it'll be a travesty.
What is this place coming to? I come here looking for a deal and all it is is a discussion! Why on earth it gets hot votes beats the life out of me.
On a positive note, the BA hand luggage allowance looks generous compared with other long haul budget carriers because you can carry 2 pieces of hand luggage up to 23kg each (which is the weight of a checked in suitcase) so provided you can pack all your stuff into 2 carry-ons you can avoid paying for check-in luggage;
Here's the official blurb;
British Airways Hand Baggage All customers are permitted to carry one piece of hand luggage and one small item (handbag, laptop) on board. Hand luggage must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm and the small item must be no bigger than 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. Both items can weight up to 23kg each.

Thanks OP! could take advantage of this in the near future!
What no nyc or la.
The last time I used b.a to fly to the USA they forgot to shut the doors properly and had to make an emergency landing at heathrow.
Great news. Lucky for me the flight doesn’t make the holiday, so as long as the thing flies and gets us to Cali for £185’ish, that’ll do
are the tier points going to remain the same ?
Awful airline, went down the pan in the last few years. Won’t use again

Have to agree with you. They are losing money big time and are panicking.

True, but Emirates is hit and miss and all depends on who you are sitting next to. I've never seen such chaos when getting on a plane with Emirates!! I', sure Emirates Business is excellent but cattle class nightmare!

They announced a third quarter profit of £1.2bn in Feb
Brilliant if you live in the south and don’t fancy flying all way to North America without hold luggage.
otherwise the rest of the UK will have to cope with more expensive flights

Are you the type that reads headlines? IAG/BA are in fact very profitable. Unlike Norwegian, etc. etc.

Emirates Economy to Maldives was a lovely experience. Good leg room, like new aircraft with excellent on board entertainment and very polite cabin crew. Couldn't ask for more to be honest.

True i only use BA if possible not many people realise how cheap they are with great flight times.
Any idea when these go live ?
