The British Museum has revamped its online collection so that almost four and a half million objects, over half its collection can be seen virtually. Under the new agreement the majority of the 1.9 million images are being made available for anyone to use for free. Users no longer need to register to use these photographs, and can now download them directly from the British Museum.

This new version of their online database has been unveiled earlier than planned due to the closure of the museum and the fact that there’s a lot of people stuck at home and visiting museums virtually.

Most of the items were stolen from around the world so this is the least they can do!

Hope you like it! - I work with the team that created this. It was a massive undertaking and many months of hard work.

Next thing they could do would be to send Parthenon marbles back to Greece.

Look at his chiseled features
Most of these will be out of copyright so, when combined with Snapfishes offers on canvases this is an ideal way of revamping that 'boring wall'

It's a shame there are no IIIF format files to download for these as they could've been popped in to Animal Crossing As per: experiments.getty.edu/ac-…tor

Or maybe they have been very carefully looked after for the world to enjoy.
Look at what just happened in Syria with I.S. deliberately destroying ancient monuments.
Fantastic! Thank you OP

There is no war in Italy,Greece and Egypt atm! Maybe they can give them back now after "carefully looked after" for centuries?

I.S. are in Egypt, in the Sinai mountains
Not in Alexandria or Cairo though. I don't remember seeing any museum on the mountains. Anyway this won't lead anywhere, thing is stolen should always be returned

Thank you for your work. The BM is my favourite museum and I visit it as often as I can. I always go and stand in front of the statue of Ramesses II every time I visit, it never gets old (pun intended) .

For thousands of years the spoils of war have been claimed by the victor. Yes, of course, its right and proper that we acknowledge that our forebears acted in a way that we now find socially unacceptable, but how far back do you try to wind the clock? Should we give Britain back to the Celts? And, of course, it ignores the fact that we, as a species, still practice this system today. Just look at the Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula. Note that I'm not defending Imperialism, but I don't think anything is served by trying to unwrite history.

There are things you can rectify in history and things you cannot. I don't think comparing land with culture is right. Btw which spoils of war are you talking about ? The Parthenon marbles were stolen by a British "Lord". I don't recall Britain and Greece being at war. Hope Big Ben doesn't end outside Trump's house

Last excuse was that the Greeks didn't have a fitting enough museum to house the Parthenon Marbles.
That's long been taken care of, yet the British establishment still potters about like nothing needs to be addressed.

British hamfisted theft from Greece was "to protect them" yet the Brits used wire wool to clean the marbles with. Also one of the two ships they had loaded with the loot to be taken to Blighty, sank within Greek territorial waters containing how many artefacts. (Divine intervention?)

Took them (Brits), over a year to dive and rescue them. Plenty of 'ambiguities' on how much of them they did retrieve, conveniently, documentation is incomplete. Wonder how many UK stately homes have items squirreled away.
As the Greeks say, kleftronia.

Doesn't work like that when kids do it? They are dragged (or at least they used to be) back to where they stole the thing they were caught with, forced to apologise, give the item back and made to repay for their wrongdoing by offering to perform some chores as a penalty for their lack of judgement.

Why should it not apply to the ransacking of Greece? The Greeks didn't loose their historic artefacts, these historic and culturally relevant items were stolen, plain and simple.
Taken from their origins by the thieving opportunist Elgin.

It is not only Greece. Egypt was probably even more robbed than them... For example London doesn't sound like right place for Rosetta stone, right?

St Catherine's monastery ? Unesco world heritage site.
I'm sure Alexander the Great stole, pillaged, pilfered and destroyed many artifacts during his rule. Should modern Greece therefore set about restoring all that ?
