From the moment they arrive they looking to sell stuff and find excuses to condemn your boiler. Stay away from BG

Where else is best to get boiler cover? We had BG for years covering our old boiler @£18 month, and never had a problem with them, but we never needed to call them out! We've replaced the boiler for a combi now which has 3 years warranty, and the plumber will be servicing it for £50 so it saves a few hundred quid during that time. After those 3 years I was thinking of going back with BG, but I've seen too many comments saying how terrible they are.

They condemned my boiler, I then called out Vaillant and they fixed it. It was the fan. I got a refund from BG.

cowboys left my boiling pouring water like an open tap and took over a month to come back to fix it.

My water bill was 600 quid!

Had to hasle for a year to get it sorted.

Condemned mine, chancers, there was nothing wrong with it. I paid for a service which she didnt do either. Feckin cowboys, beware.

Our experience of BG has been positive. To my surprise they were willing to cover our extremely old back boiler and have come out promptly to fix it whenever there has been a problem.

Don't do it................ You'll get them to turn out ....unless they are busy!!! During this winter I know 3 people who tried to get an attendance, they only got an answer phone saying that the service was suspended as they were too busy!!!! All 3 cancelled their direct debits.

Came out and condemned my boiler too. Refused to cover it but did offer to send a salesman round to sell us a boiler

any alternatives then? i'm looking for boiler cover :-/

there is AA but again they also have been condemned by BBC......£22 per month £60 cashback!
homeserve are also been referred as cowboys... there is not much to choose from!!! i am afraid.
my experience with BG has been ok as i never had to call them for a breakdown,(sorry i had to call them once and they had fixed that without any hassle) for 13 quid i think i would give them a another year to see how they perform..

they cover only new boilers upto 3 years old which obviously you will have gaurentee
if it's more than that they will take money from you but will come after few months and say your boiler is too old doesn't meet safety standards and they will not cover but can keep taking money from you and you will asked to install new boiler for about 4K plus

stay well away from them

So if theyre all as bad as one another your only choices are, choose one of them at random and hope for the best, or save the £20/month and pay out yourself when the boiler goes wrong? Sounds like it could end up pricey!

There is scottish power and a few others. They are all a much of a muchness really, and price wise they are all about the same +/- £25. I was going to go with homeserve as they were doing a deal for the basic boiler cover for £60 for the whole year with no excess. This relied on getting quidco which was £60 2 months ago. I think it was worth the punt.

Personally I'd recommend getting a decent boiler if you can afford it such as Atag, Intergas, Vaillant, Bosch. If you can't afford them, then get the cheapies with 5 year warranties such as ferroli, biasi but make sure you get them serviced every year so the manufacturer can't get out of their guarantee as they are built to a budget so you will need the guarantee

We've been with BG for 8 yrs, a couple of call outs, sorted no problem, and a new boiler last year. Cheapest quote, less than 2.5k (not.combi I like my airing cupboard! And not advised due to.number of radiator etc) service was great. Would recommend compared to the service we had from npower before!

Positive for BG from me too.

I posted a deal a while ago with this at a good price and it went cold due to negative comments, mainly from ill informed commenters.

My only gripe with them is after the first year they bump the price up so you have to do battle with them.

Most good quality boilers which would service a three or four bedroomed house, (say a 30Kilowatt Glow-worm), retail for under £1000. Most registered gas fitters will work for £200 to £250 per day on the side. A simple boiler change should take one or two days. Add new pump, new stats, a bit of pipe and a few fittings and you should be looking at less than £2k for a straight-forward job.

Well, had a issue few years back with leak in central heating system, first called BG, said he couldn't repair..called Homeserve as I had both and the same person turned up, gutted. As per him all the agencies piggy back on each other and if you are unlucky like me the same person will turn up as he was sole repairer in our area. Unimpressed & cancelled BG immediately.

You can get a new boiler fitted for around £1000 - soething like a procombi 24he or a biasi avanta 24. Boiler costs £662 and someone should not chareg more than £300 to just do a boiler swap as it is a one and a half or 2 day job at the most.

seems expensive , our Worcester Bosch oil combi is 10 years old and contract inc. annual service is £140 odd , through Domestic and General but Bosch engineers are always sent out. Nearly every part has been replaced so we've had our monies worth.

We have been with BG for the last 10 years and have had multi repairs on our system. We have our electrics, white goods and drains covered as well and we have certainly had our moneys worth. The service has got slower over the years and we did have one complaint regarding the electrics but overall we have been very please with the service. Expensive but if you want peace of mind plus a number to call when things go wrong then I'd recommend

service with British Gas must depend on where you live...I have been covered by them ever since we bought our first house about 10 years ago and they have been really good for us particularly since we have moved here, can't fault them always friendly and efficient and no problems getting service.

have had BG for over twenty years, They recently changed the complete back boiler unit in my old Baxi. never had a problem and always arrived prompt.

I'm with Scottish Southern Electric, advertised as £2.98 per week for boiler cover (I'm £16.00 pm, which I'll question with them) excellent service from them so far. called them out 3 times in past 2 years.
as seen here

I have found their service to be not so great recently. Had burst pipe & radiator just before xmas so the heating system just drained. BG engineer came & fixed the leak & said would come back following week to replace the radiator as it had to be ordered. When he returned the following week I asked if he had added anti corrosive chemical in the system as it had drained - he said he hadn't but would do so now. He replaced radiator and just as he was leaving I asked if he added the chemical he hesitantly replied that he had. When I went to the room with new radiator I found all sorts of bits/packaging left behind from his work but no sign of this anti corrosive stuff so I doubted he actually put any in. Few weeks later there was another burst pipe and so the system drained out again. Another BG engineer came & fixed the leak - when I asked him if he had added anticorrosive chemical he replied no as it was added few weeks ago & also when system installed so there should still be some left in the system. His manager was there too and he said if you have too much it can damage your system.

Since then I discovered that what I was told was untrue. I called them out again advising them that I had system tested & found not enough anticorrosive stuff in the system. They also came & tested and agreed that not enough in and so added more. I didn't know this but not having enough can damage your pipes, boiler & radiators.

I used to trust & rely on these people to provide a good & honest service but I now see them in the same light as salesmen.

Lol.... our local gas fitters won't get out of bed for less than £400 a day.

Amazing service every time, worth every penny!
