Thanks ajavaid92 for your post, and Miss MellyG for pointing out the price drop! I just got through Flubit for £65.87 if you are happy trying them, but was happy to buy @ £81, gave it heat at £97.98! Link to cheap toner on other deal. Seems a better printer than the Dell that ebuyer often have, and cheaper. I understand the Brother toner isn't too competitive. But sick of Epson inkjet drying out, time to try something different!

Toner price?

Voted hot, but the main thing is the cost of toners.

from 1st thread... ebay link Your text herecheap generic set of replacement toner cartridges (up to 2,500pages black and 1,400pages colour @ 5% coverage) for £34.99 delivered. I want for home, so reasonable for me. A guy on other thread said prints 500 pages a week and refills toner himself. I am buying compatibles for inkjet and Epson software rejects them or they dryout, hoping this is a better way!

Glad I caught this as I only took delivery of this yesterday at £98, quick online chat and the superb Amazon customer services refund the difference. Thanks OP

Excellent deal.

Have to say though, when I worked in support for some software, 99% of printer issues I got were from Brother printers...

did you work for brother?

shame no auto-duplex

ordered. Thanks. Have the other BW non wireless version of here. Great printers.

put this through flubit and got it down to £65, now do I need it as already have a hp wifi laser printer. hmm.

would this be capable of using thick paper 250mg-350mg?
thanks

stick to dell printers toner set £10

Note that this version hasn't got a D in the part number .... so no duplexer fitted.
Compatible toners are £9 or £10 on ebay for these , and last 2k sheets.
Drum replacement may be required at 15k sheets, which at £60 could write off the printer.

If it lasts 15k pages I will be happy, more than all my other printers combined! But for businesses a consideration

Super hot surely, colour laser air print from amazon, best I've ever seen

Are you serious? Laser toner lasts much longer than 15 pages!! We are not talking about deskjet cartridge here. Printers are outdated very quickly ..

Ah! Now that is another extreme! X)

From the research I did on this before buying this is supposed to be fast with good to very good color prints, something to do with the LED technology rather then a laser, apparently leds tech offer higher resolution then a laser does.

I have also bought some gloss coat laser paper to find out how good you can get this to print. I am not expecting Ink jet quality but from the reviews the paper makes a big difference in the quality. Much like it does for ink jet.

why no ethernet dammnit!

Wish there was some Dell bargains, as they are smaller and lighter than this Brother.

I was considering the Epson inkjet XP422 which is £48 at Costco from Monday, as I wanted AirPrint and Google Cloud print for occasional home use on a budget using compatibles.

Do you guys reckon this would be a better bet? I've always avoided lasers because of the cost of toner, but am I understanding it correctly that a compatible toner for this would be about a tenner and last for a couple of thousand pages?

Thanks for any advice - printers aren't my strong point!!

If u r just talking about black & white text this should be better as u don't get feathering.

Starter toners in this one are 1000 pages each (CMY and K)

Bigger used to mean more robust!
This has got (I think) a large paper drawer which probably takes half a ream, which is handy

The main advantage to me (an occasional printer) (and probably to you?) is that there is no ink to dry and clog the jets.
The disadvantage is that the resolution is quite a lot less than you'd get with any ink jet. You won't get good quality photo prints

I got the Dell printer from ebuyer for £90 and the cartridges are only £12 for a full set on ebay and they work fine for hundreds of copies each.
My only issue is that the basic laser printers don't include a scanner, so I've just splashed out £150 from ebuyer to buy the higher Dell model which still uses the £12 cartridges.
I would never go back to inkjet again.

Can you print on both sides?

Its not Duplex, so you'd have to manually take the paper out, flip it over and print on the back.

Thanks. Do you find that the drying/clogging is something that you've had in particular with Epson? I've never really noticed a problem with that with the few Canon's I've had using cheap inks, so I wonder if I'd be better looking for an updated Canon. The Costco deal seemed pretty good, and I couldn't really bothered doing all the research hence I thought I'd just go for that, until I saw this. Perhaps this isn't so good for me though.

Epson used to have just ink cartridges, others have a combined ink and jet cartridge. The former is more likely to clog as the jets aren't replaced every time but the cartridges are cheaper, as they don't include jets. But both will clog if left for long enough. A laser can go for years without printing as it just uses dry powder. The powder can settle after an extended period, then you just need to take the cartridges out and shake them.
For an occasional printer like me (I may not print for weeks) lasers are the answer

Thanks, wasn't aware of that. I don't print a massive amount, but do odd pages here and there - holiday booking confirmations and things like that. I'd say it's rare that I go more than a week or so without printing out a few bits and bobs, so perhaps it would be ok. Now I'm aware of it I'll probably make more effort just to print out half a page every so often if I've not used it otherwise.
